Excellent, fascinating history book

I really liked this book. It describes what Germany was like during the Hitler years - particularly why so many ordinary Germans supported Hitler and the Nazis to the bitter end. The author uses journals and diaries to reveal the thoughts and feelings of people in Germany during this period and how they changed over time. He explores the benefits of the "people's community" or "Volksgemeinschaft" and how the Nazis used it to their own advantage. He talks about the various camps people were sent to - not concentration camps - but camps for students, teachers, doctors, lawyers, etc. - where they took part in workshops designed to promote Nazi propaganda as well as fellowship with each other. Also discussed is the Nazis' attempt to mninimize enmity between social classes and emphasize everybody pulling together to make Germany "great" again. Fritzsche talks about Germans' feelings about Jews from 1933 to 1945 and why so many people simply ignored or discounted the terrible things that were happening to them. I recommend this book very highly. Not only is it very interesting, it is also very well written and easy to read. A+.

One of the better books on the Third Reich I've read

Simply put, this is one of the best books on the Third Reich I've ever read. Fritzsche has produced a book that ranks among the better one-volume histories of the Nazi regime. While the title may make you think this book is all about eugenics or the Holocaust (and those topics are covered in detail), in actuality I found this to be a book about why the Nazis came to the policy conclusions they did, how they enacted them, and what their world view was about. Using numerous diaries, letters from the front, newspaper accounts, and other primary sources, Fritzsche lets the people of Germany tell much of the tale. The book reads well and I think Fritzsche convinces the reader of this thesis: namely, that in order for the Germans to live (those the Nazis deemed worthy, of course), others had to die. Thus, the title of the book. I disagree with another reviewer who seemed to think Fritzsche has an agenda at work here. Instead, I thought the book was very reasonably argued and did not seem to be a stretch of the evidence just to prove the author's point or reach his goal. I'd highly recommend this to anyone interested in Nazi Germany and what day to day life was like in Germany under Nazi rule.

About the Author
W. Terrence Gordon has published more than twenty books, including McLuhan For Beginners and Linguistics For Beginners. He is currently at work on a book about James Joyce and a biographical fiction about the legendary linguist Charles Kay Ogden. When he is not busy writing or teaching, Gordon photographs the haunting beauty of Nova Scotia, Canada, where he has lived since the 1970s.

Abbe Lubell was born in Queens, NY in 1962. She graduated from Oberlin College and then received an MFA from the School of Visual Arts in NY. She has worked as a designer for Tiffany & Co. for many years and has exhibited her paintings sporadically. She lives in Brooklyn with her husband Paul Gordon and two daughters, Sophia and Halle.

Excellent Guitar Transcriptions, the best I've seen!

.38 Special has been one of my favorite bands for years. I was pleased to see that a "Recorded Versions" Guitar book was to be released and ordered it. All the songs are in tablature as well as standard notation with the lyrics. Included in the tabs are of course the chords and guitar solos, but also the guitar fills and the outro-guitar solos. .38 Special has three guitarists and ALL THREE GUITAR PARTS are included in the notations, this is quality! I am extremely happy with this book, it is well worth buying.

Great way to learn some 38 Special songs

I have a number of the Tab books and the Hal Leonard (Guitar Recorded Version) are the very best! Some of the other brands are kind as well written or have all of the guitar parts seperated. I don't know how you can figure out a band like 38 Special that had 3 guitars going on many songs at the same time some of these even have 5 parts. How do you hear all of that? Or are they getting the original master tapes and can go through each part seperatly? Whatever they do these are the very best of the Tablature Music Books!
Buy with confidence very few mistakes.

What you hear is what you get

The 38 Special Music Book is a true note for note tab book for those who love the group and their style of playing guitar. As somebody who has always enjoyed their sound and could never quite get it right on my Gibson SG this was perfect. Just know that 38 Special has three guitars on stage and you can indeed get the sound but you'll be a little short on the guitar harmony sections. All three guitar sections are noted and laid out so you can pick what best brings their music alive to your ears. Good luck

good, but not for Kindle

This is a well presented book of information and inspiration, but do not purchase it for your Kindle. A substantial part of the guides presented are in table form and they are unreadable on my Kindle. I think it is highly unethical of Amazon to even offer a book for the Kindle when important portions of the book are unreadable.

A Diet Book, with some cycling

I had gotten this book for Christmas and was initially excited to read it. I had hoped to find something to expound upon my existing cycling knowledge and how I can use my bike to help shed the pounds. Instead I found myself reading what was essentially a diet book with a bit of cycling knowledge thrown in.

This reads just like every other diet book on the market, with the author detailing her harrowing journey to lose 10 pounds (big deal) and how she's helped so many people shed pounds over the years (not so much her as Bicycling magazine).

1/2 of the book is cycling/weight loss testimonials.
1/3 is full page b/w images of off-bike strength exercises
and the remainder is actually about cycling.

I'm extremely disappointed. Had I known this book was such fluff I would not have put it on my Amazon wishlist.

Encouraging for beginners, a bit light for avid cyclists

Ride Your Way Lean advocates cycling as an exercise and lifestyle choice to lean up. It begins with very basic information: why cycling, how to buy a bike, equipment - and my fear was that it would be too simplistic for my needs. It gets a bit more helpful though, with good discussions of basic nutrition, eating plans, ride plans, indoor trainer exercises, off-bike exercises and other goodies.

I would recommend this book to somebody who's considering or just getting into cycling. For more seasoned riders wanting more depth of content, see Base Building for Cyclists by Chapple, or The Time Crunched Cyclist by Carmichael.

STELLA SAPERSTEIN was trained at the Leningrad Conservatory in Russia as a concert pianist and college piano instructor and has taught piano for more than 30 years. She immigrated to the United States in 1979, and currently maintains a successful private piano studio in Phoenix, Arizona.
BETH LUEY teaches at Arizona State University, is the author of many books about writing and publishing, including Handbook for Academic Authors, and is an amateur pianist. Her daughter, Nora, studied piano with Stella Saperstein for 12 years and now attends Harvard.

Excellent, Realistic Guidance for Parents

I found this book interesting to read yet straight to the point. It's as much a good parenting book as a how-to guide for music education. It offers realistic guidelines and specific suggestions for almost every situation, and there's even a section on when (and when not) to quit! I liked the sample pages for getting kids to take responsibility for their own practice time, instead of parents having to nag them. This book has something worthwhile to offer for every level of musical ability, not just aspiring orchestra players, and it is obvious that the authors have in mind not just the "success" of the child in music, but the development of the child as a whole person.

93.53MB/s sequential reads and 56.63MB/s sequential writes

Works great, very fast, no compatibility issues with devices that support SDXC. Was able to do 93.53MB/s sequential reads and 56.63MB/s sequential writes. The random writes are slower, so this wouldn't be great for an OS (like a Raspberry Pi). But perfectly designed and very fast for a camera recording images or video.

ALERT! These may not be truly UHS-I U3

[[VIDEOID:c9b61fbda6b9c8d82898da1d315621d6]] I purchase this in order to record 4k on my Sony AX33 using the 100mbs for the highest quality 4k (vs 60mbs). I install the card and I set to 100mbs but, receive a message that I must install a U3 card. That is what I purchased. I did some research online and found a reference where some where having the same issue and others were not. I decided to go to a local store and I found the exact same PNY SD card. I purchased it and tried it at home. Well guess what? It worked! Not errors. I looked at both packages in great detail and only found a few differences. Note the pictures: The SD card on the right DOES work as a UHS-I U3 @ 100mbs the one on the left I purchased from amazon and is NOT recognized as a UHS-I U3. Works perfectly -- and at a great price

I got this card about 10 days ago and have used it extensively. I was particularly interested in its U3 speed rating, since I shoot lots of 4K video at a speed of 100 Mbps (I use a Panasonic ZS100 camera). So far, this 128GB PNY SD card has worked perfectly, with no hiccups or problems. Even with 4K video at 100 Mbps, it can hold a LOT of video.

Good price and no glitches -- excellent product.

June 2, 2016 edit: I've now used this card for a month, extensively shooting 4K video. There has not been one glitch with this card -- excellent performance at a great price.

About the Author
Michael L. Cain, having opted to change careers and focus full-time on writing, is currently affiliated with Bowdoin College, USA. He has instructed students across a wide range of subjects, including introductory biology, ecology, field ecology, evolution, botany, mathematical biology, and biostatistics. His research interests include: plant ecology; long-distance dispersal; ecological and evolutionary dynamics in hybrid zones; and search behavior in plants and animals. William D. Bowman is Professor at the University of Colorado at Boulder, USA, affiliated with the Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology, Mountain Research Station, and the Institute of Arctic and Alpine Research. Dr. Bowman has taught courses in introductory ecology, plant ecology, plant-soil interactions, and ecosystems ecology, and for over two decades he has directed undergraduate summer field courses and research programs. His research focuses on the intersections of physiological ecology, community dynamics, and ecosystem function, particularly in the context of environmental change. Sally D. Hacker is Professor at Oregon State University, Corvallis, USA where she has been a faculty member since 2004. As a community ecologist interested in natural and managed coastal, dune, and estuarine communities, Dr. Hacker's research explores the structures, functions, and services of communities under varying contexts of species interactions and global change. Her work has most recently focused on the protective role of ecosystems in mitigating coastal vulnerability due to climate change. She is author or co-author on numerous articles and book chapters exploring species interactions, marine invasions, and ecosystem services important to marine spatial planning and ecosystem-based management.

Ecological toolkits?

I am reading this book to enhance my understanding of ecology before applying to grad school in the subject. So far it has been enjoyable to read, if a bit long. Question I am hoping someone can answer- where are the ecological toolkits? They are bolded in the text, but I do not see them in either the text or the accompanying website. I think they describe methods of collecting data for studying ecology, which would be helpful to me in formulating a thesis topic. Thank you!
