From School Library Journal
Grade 6 Up—The subtitle of this collection is somewhat misleading as only the first half of the book involves the titular characters. It is a transitional volume of sorts, marking the end of Johns's celebrated 26-issue run with an exciting conclusion to a Shazam family crisis. Ordway's short, two-issue story that follows serves as little more than filler, as Bill Willingham (of Fables fame) would take over in issue 29, continuing as the book's writer to the present. Black Adam is also misleading in its indication that it is a self-contained story arc, when it is actually the fifth volume of the current incarnation of Justice Society. Considering Johns's reputation, it's important to have the previous four volumes in the series for the sake of continuity. While perhaps not as central a series to the DC Universe as the "Batman" or "Green Lantern" titles, JSA has a rich cast of unique, often underrated superheroes—and with a capable writer like Johns at the helm, the series gives even the most well-known characters' books a serious run for their money.—Jason M. Geoff Johns JSA finale
By dishpandan
When the Black Marvels are written well they are an enthralling group of characters. Teth Adam in particular is very complex under Johns and the return of Isis adds more interesting depth to his outcome. I really enjoyed this collection and would recommend it if you liked any of his previous JSA volumes or the Black Adam solo mini-series. There are a lot of players involved here so that can make you lost -- it's best if this volume is where you end instead of where you start. The plot will also have a great deal more impact if you are familiar with and attached to these people. While not a must, it helps if you have also read Infinite Crises and 52, since this kind of builds on some events that happened there. Even having read all those, I have not read Captain Marvel, so I was a little confused with some of the recent changes in that mythos. But overall it was well worth the purchase. I am pleased that rather than break up the collections between the end of Geoff Johns' run and the start of Jerry Ordway's, DC included the first few issues of the next storyline here so that you can get a taste of the new creative team. Excellent idea!

Johns takes off, Ordway runs in place, Willingham waits in the wings
By H. Bala
Disappointed with the lack of team cohesion during the went-on-forever Gog/Magog/Kingdom Come snoozefest, the core members of the JSA are deliberating whether the roster should be downsized. Meanwhile, we catch up with what's going on with young Billy Batson (who is now the guardian wizard-in-residence on the Rock of Eternity) and also with Black Adam and his efforts to rescue his resurrected wife Isis from the sicko hands of Felix Faust. Faust gets what's coming to him, and Black Adam and Isis reunite and turn their attention to amassing their power base. They start out by attempting to steal the Rock of Eternity's mystical mojo. Isis inadvertently teleports Billy Batson to Fawcett City and, with the writers recalling whose series this is, the JSA swoops in to help the now powerless Billy.

JUSTICE SOCIETY OF AMERICA: BLACK ADAM AND ISIS collects issues #23-28 as the ongoing series goes thru its changing of the guard. Geoff Johns hangs around long enough to collaborate with Jerry Ordway in the Black Adam and Isis arc, although, much like Johns seemed to have been indulging Alex Ross in the Thy Kingdom Come arc, here he seems to be humoring Jerry Ordway. The Black Adam & Isis plot, as other folks have already mentioned, feels like a pick up of plot threads from 52 and the BLACK ADAM: THE DARK AGE mini-series, from COUNTDOWN TO FINAL CRISIS to FINAL CRISIS, and even from Ordway's POWER OF SHAZAM! Many pages go by in which the JSA is pretty much relegated to supporting role status.

The now embittered Isis longs to recreate a Black Marvel family which will "destroy the modern worlds and all the sins it festers with." Not too surprisingly, Mary Marvel - plumb loca, pink-haired and gigged out in a black-leather dominatrix outfit - is recruited and the corrosion of her character can't help but still creep me out. A fourth member soon joins the Black Marvels, and the JSAers soon have more than they can handle. Until the inevitable deus ex machina appears, which, by the way, feels rather contrived and threatens to undermine the latest changes in the Marvel family mythos (I'm looking at you, Freddy Freeman).

I don't know that I can pinpoint it all that well, but this arc falls a bit flat for me. I think partly it's because this feels more like a Black Marvels story more so than a JSA story. Also, I wasn't ever down with poor Billy Batson losing his Captain Marvel gig and getting "promoted" as the new wizard languishing on the Rock of Eternity. And I guess I also don't like Isis having become this hardcore scourge of humanity. And, with Atom-Smasher officially regaining membership status, it leaves even less time to focus on the new recruits, who barely get face time in this arc. On the good side, Stargirl is featured a bit and shares a nice moment with Billy Batson, hearkening to their innocent "romance" back in the day when Captain Marvel was a JSAer.

If this had been Geoff Johns' farewell story, I don't know that I would've called it going out on a high. But his swan song, issue #26, turns out to be a terrific little story featuring Stargirl, a character for whom Johns clearly has great affection. No super-villains in this one or world-ending catastrophes, although teenager Courtney Whitmore (a.k.a. Stargirl) does start the story off by wailing: "Black Adam Ruined My Birthday!" This is Geoff Johns' coda and, as the JSA and friends celebrate Courtney's surprise birthday party, we're treated to a series of wonderful little character moments, and we're left with that warm, feel-good sensation. And *that* is going out on a high. My favorite moments have to do with Starman's hilarious concept of "birthday presents" and Courtney's hugging it out with her step-dad - and if you're aware of Courtney and Stripesy's sometimes adversarial relationship, then this is an absolutely emotional scene. Alex Ross's evocative cover also doesn't hurt. Dale Eaglesham's interior art for this issue definitely doesn't hurt. Starman gets in the last word, and it is perfect.

Fully written and pencilled by Jerry Ordway, the two-part ghost story in issues #27 and 28 isn't bad, but it feels like a filler. The JSA confronts the vengeful spirit of a World War 2 supervillain, and, as usual with supernatural activities, the Spectre pokes his pasty white nose in. Trust issues resurface when the JSA's brownstone headquarters in Battery Park is at first alarmingly sealed off by Obsidian and then attacked by a ghost. This is followed by time travel as select members of the JSA are snatched back to 1945 Japan to face retribution. There's a nice twist at the end which almost makes up for the hohumness of the story.

Capping things off is the six-paged backup feature "Origins & Omens," as Scar, the messed-up Guardian of the Universe, casts a dark eye on the JSA and predicts doom and gloom for the team's future. And, apparently suffering from Legion-envy, the JSA decides to expand its roster even more.

I can't wait until Bill Willingham takes over the series. If anyone can revitalize the JSA, it's that dude. Concerning this one, I think that the Black Adam & Isis arc and the WW2 ghost story merit a rating of 3 out of 5 stars, but the inclusion of the Stargirl birthday bash kicks it up to an overall rating of 3.5 stars. Because you can never ever go wrong with having more of Stargirl.

A complete waste of time
By Nicholas Ribera
After just finishing 52, I was all like "hell yeah I want to read more shenanigans of Black Adam!" Unfortunately, this book contains about 10% black adam stuff while the rest is random adventures not at all tied together much like a 1940's JSA issue would be. Also in that caliber is the writing that ensues- most characters only speak in catch phrases and few of them actually have any insightful dialogue.

Worse, though, for me, is the art. While in itself it's not bad, it is just so incredibly static. There is no sense of action in the pages, it's like everyone poses to get heir pictures taken, and there is hardly any use of dramatic angles or perspective. the pacing is also very random, often leaving you looking at two panels over and over again trying to find out how we are going from A to B. You do not get the sense of a film camera moving through a set that really helps a comic to flow in an easy to read form. The only exception is the second issue, which has more dynamic movement and clothing. You feel like the characters are actually moving as they speak, not just frozen in suspended animation with their mouth agape. Plus, the POV pans and tilts from eye level, making the scene much more identifiable.

Overall, this was a misleading title and misleading cover and I wish I had not bought it.

The Retreat: Hitler's First Defeat, by Michael Jones

The gripping history of the ferocious turning point of World War Two, when Hitler's armies were halted on the Eastern Front

At the moment of crisis in late 1941 on the Eastern Front, with the forces of Hitler massing on the outskirts of Moscow, the miraculous occurred: Moscow was saved. Yet this feat of endurance was a prelude to a long and arduous retreat in which Soviet troops, inspired by deep beliefs in the sacred Motherland, pushed back German forces steeled by the vision of the Ubermensch--the iron-willed fighter. Supported by tanks and ski battalions, Soviet troops engaged in this desperate struggle in the harshest Russian weather.

Michael Jones draws upon a wealth of new eyewitness testimonies from both sides of the conflict to vividly chronicle this pivotal chapter in the Second World War as he takes us from the German invasion of the Soviet Union on the morning of June 22 through the counteroffensive that carried into the spring of 1942. From the German soldier finding his comrades frozen into blocks of ice to the Russian lieutenant crying with rage at the senseless destruction of his unit, the author shows us the faces of war when the Wehrmacht was repelled and the titanic and cruel struggle of two world powers forged the fate of Europe.

From Publishers Weekly
Jones's earlier Leningrad and Stalingrad established this British military historian's skill in conveying the human dimensions of the Russo-German War. His new narrative addresses the German sweep through Russia in the summer of 1941, its defeat at the gates of Moscow by a rejuvenated Red Army, and the massive Soviet counterattack that pushed the Wehrmacht to the edge of destruction. Jones makes a convincing case that the Fuehrer's "stand fast" order in December 1941 entailed unnecessary losses. Retreat, he argues, did not inevitably mean collapse. The point remains debatable. But there is no question of Jones's success presenting, in their own words, the growing conviction of the Germans doing the fighting that Barbarossa had been a compound mistake. "Does no one realize what it is like here?" asked one bewildered corps commander. Across the battle line, six months of atrocities demonstrated to the Russian people that whatever was wrong with the U.S.S.R., the Germans were not the solution. "I vowed to kill as many of them as possible," wrote one Soviet junior officer. His words are an epigram for an apocalyptic war, perceptively evoked here. 8 pages of b&w photos; 3 maps. (Dec.) (c)

From Booklist
A military historian with particular expertise on the eastern front of WWII offers this grimly absorbing account of one of the battles that shaped the whole campaign: the German retreat from Moscow in December 1941. Already overextended and undersupplied, the Germans were in no position to resist a massive Soviet counterattack. The next two months were the stuff of nightmares for the soldiers on both sides, whose letters and memoirs have been exhaustively used to paint a horrifying picture of starvation, cold weather, nonexistent medical care, and a complete lack of compassion for opponents (two million Russian POWs died during this period). The Germans suffered an additional defeat, because Hitler believed that his No retreat! order saved his army from rout and from its defeatist generals. His assumption of the supreme command, fully equipped with vast arrogance and little skill, was another large stone that eventually helped build the tomb of the Third Reich. Sound and readable. --Roland Green

Ground-level look at the Eastern Front
By Scott Whitmore
The fall of the Iron Curtain and the Soviet Union, and the subsequent release of archives and documents, has been a boon to military historians like Michael Jones. Jones has written several books on the Eastern Front, including my most recent read: The Retreat: Hitler's First Defeat.

The Retreat does not break any new ground in describing the Red Army turning back Hitler's armies at the gates of Moscow during the critical months of December 1941-February 1942, but where it stands out is the narrative method. Jones draws heavily from first-hand accounts in diaries, letters, unit histories, and interviews of soldiers and civilians people on both sides, crafting a very human perspective of events.

Of particular note for me was the number of very senior German officers who realized the Nazi's harsh treatment of Soviet prisoners was creating a human tragedy that would have severe consequences. We could argue whether these officers could or should have done more than simply report the situation -- prisoners were starved, beaten, diseased, overworked, and out-and-out murdered while held in ad-hoc camps with little protection from the harsh winter -- but the record at least shows they were aware and concerned.

Tens of thousands of Soviet prisoners died in German captivity, and the Red Army carefully ensured its soldiers were aware it was happening -- ensuring most Soviet soldiers would fight fanatically and with utter hatred for the Nazi invaders.

Common German soldiers were also aware of what was happening with prisoners, and more directly the civilian populace. There are several instances in The Retreat in which individual soldiers from both sides displayed humanity and compassion, including a spontaneous Christmas mass attended by combatants and civilians from both sides.

Of course these incidents are overshadowed by the brutality and no-holds-barred fighting which is the common -- and correctly held -- perception of warfare on the Eastern Front. Many German soldiers and senior officers shared Hitler's rampant racism and hate of the Soviet system, and their actions and words show this clearly. Still, it is refreshing to see the views of a few individuals change over the course of the book, as they come to grips with seeing the results of their actions.

My largest quibble with this book is the lack of photos in the Kindle edition. The author speaks in the preface of obtaining photos during interviews with participants, and the hardcover listing on Amazon.com indicates eight pages of photos, but evidently these were not deemed necessary for the eBook version.

I found The Retreat to be very interesting and I would recommend it to anyone interested in getting a ground-level look at action on the Eastern Front. It was a quick read, with Jones setting the stage by providing strategic updates on the situation before shifting to first-person accounts that added color and drama.

A Paul Carell type of read
By DrBig
I'm not going to repeat the points already made in the excellent 3-5 star reviews already posted; I largely agree with them.

I would offer that this book reminded me of Paul Carell's "Hitler Moves East", although much more balanced. It captured the initial enthusiasm felt by the troops for their belief in Hitler's crusade in the east, followed by growing doubts as Summer passed into Winter, the temperature dropped & Ivan showed no signs of collapse as the German Army was promised. What really jumped out at me were the atrocities committed by the regular German Army in 1941, often advertised as the excesses of the SS in other works. Granted there were honorable German soldiers & they are adequately portrayed in this book, but in large, the average German soldier didn't have the time, resources, and moral compass to behave with dignity in the east. Everything in Barbrossa/Typhoon was extreme. The volume of prisoners was extreme, the wear & tear on man & machine was extreme, the climate was extreme, the zeal of the defenders was extreme, and German resources were few. No food or shelter for the POWs, no winter clothing for the troops, no replacements for the excessive losses.

I give 4 out of 5 stars for a few technical faults. a) the claim that the T-34 was first encountered in Typhoon, and b) the lack of a decent map

Excellent
By Thomas Reiter
First, I should say that if I could have, I would have given this book 4 1/2 stars, rather than 4, because it is an excellent book for what it is, which is a collection of German-centric anecdotes from fall 41-spring 42 regarding the fighting around Moscow. The author includes numerous memorable accounts about the fighting during this period, as well the the suffering endured by both armies and civilians. Importantly, he doesn't seem to have a ideological agenda, and includes many interesting accounts regardless of whether it makes the Germans or Sov side look good or bad, competent or incompetent.

The only slight flaws in this book are:
1) while the author includes a limited number of accounts from the Sov side, the vast majority are from the German side. The quality of the German accounts generally makes up for this, but it would have made an excellent book even better to have used more Sov sources.

2) The author doesn't include quite enough about the "big picture." While the author gives a general description of what was going on with the overall front, I think he could have done a bit better at tying the individual accounts into the overall action.

That said, these "criticisms" are really quibbles--if you are interested in East Front action, you'll almost certainly greatly enjoy this book.

Good book, but be careful if you buy used
By Matthew Maguire
This is an excellent book if you are new to C++ or even if you have some prior programming experience. It covers numerous topics and a lot of the information can be generalized to other programming languages as well.

My one major complaint is that the author/publisher have only made the appendices and extra materials available for 6 months with a special online code, only one of which comes with the book. If you need a new code, you have to spend upwards of $20 for it. In case you purchase a used copy of this book, the code will likely already have been used. Isn't the point of buying a book so that you get all of the information in one place without having to pay ANOTHER $20 for a new code which only works for a limited time? Limited time literature, seriously? Stupid.

An Absolutely Wonderful Introduction to the C++ Language
By E
We're using 'Starting Out with C++: From Control Structures through Objects' in our freshman C++ class. The author Tony Gaddis has a very nice, lucid writing style that explains the basic fundamentals of the C++ language to a beginning crowd: the text is not bogged down with overly verbose technical language as this is not appropriate for beginners.

But don't think that Gaddis doesn't introduce technical aspects of the language to the reader: he does, and does so in a fresh, clear manner, which makes this text actually very enjoyable in the classroom and even outside of the classroom.

I love the code samples in every chapter which makes for great studying: you can sit down with the text in your lap and type the code examples in your compiler, run it, see the results, and play with it. The author seems to understand that you really learn C++ (or any language for that matter) by not reading the book, but through trying the examples as there are literally TONS of code examples per section in each chapter to try out.

I also really appreciate the checkpoints capping every section to test your knowledge of what you just read, the "gotcha" notes interspersed throughout each chapter, as well as the 'Focus on Software Engineering' asides that introduce beginning programmers to important aspects of code style, comparisons/contrasts between C and C++, what constructs are better to use in certain situations over others, etc.

The text also comes with a CodeMate CD-ROM and sold separately is the Lab Manual but also comes in handy (or is a necessary evil if you have to purchase it anyway for lab like me).

All in all, if you are a computer science/engineering major or minor or you're simply someone who wants to learn how to program from a text that covers material more like a college textbook rather than an O'Reilly overview book, 'Staring Out with C++' is the way to go. If you read through the chapters, do the checkpoints, run the code examples, do the chapter reviews at the end, and pay attention to the 'Focus on Software Engineering' and gotcha asides, you'll be up and programming in C++ in NO TIME. This is a beginner's text but you'll learn about typecasting, creating your own functions, and the chapter on loops and decision-making was the best I've seen in any introductory C++ text yet. Major kudos to Gaddis: keep up the excellent work! FIVE STARS!

Kindle Version Is Not The Same As The Full Print Version
By Michael
The textbook itself gets five starts. It does a great job of teaching a beginner programmer. Some of the chapters do seem to reiterate some topics more times than necessary, but perhaps that's the author choosing to err on the side of caution to make sure certain teaching points stick.

Taking online courses for my degree, I read this book pretty much from cover to cover. The book teaches to the beginner without being condescending. It is very well written with a lot of good examples, charts, figures, tables, etc. and tons of review questions throughout each chapter and yet more questions as well as "programming challenges" at the end of each chapter that give you a chance to apply what you've learned.

Having said that, Amazon only gets three stars on this book. If you buy the Kindle version, please note that it is NOT the same as the full print version provided by the link on the full print version's page. This Kindle "Brief Version" has some 200 fewer pages than the actual print version. Having seen the print version's table of contents, I noted that the chapters missing from the Kindle version include the following topics: Exceptions, Linked Lists, Stacks, Queues, Recursion, and Binary Trees. Therefore, if you're a computer science major, you probably want to go ahead and buy the full print version.

Had the Kindle version contained the last five chapters as I initially expected, it would get five stars. Now I know to verify Amazon's links by comparing the ISBN and page counts prior to buying a Kindle version. Live and learn...

FOR ALL THOSE WHO LOVE AN ARABIAN ROMANCE !!!
By Kelly Owens
"I AM MASTER AND HERE--I AM THE LAW" (BACK OF THE BOOK)
** "Sheikh Suliman El Khazir was a powerful man and used to getting what he wanted, and what he wanted was for Beth to be his desert bride!
** Despite her growing attraction, all Beth's instincts told her to resist. They were worlds apart--she was an independent woman and he wanted a wife who would obey his every whim. But then he kidnapped her and, alone with the sheikh, Beth was finding it increasingly difficult not to surrender to her desert Destiny." ***
~~ I absolutely loved this book. It was passionate and exciting from the very moment they meet, which happens to be on the 2nd page. From there it gets better and better, until you can't wait to see what will happen between these two opposing personalities, each wanting there own thing and neither wanting to submit and be mastered by the other.
~~ If you love a great Alpha Male who is dominant, masterful, [...], then you will absolutely love this book...And the woman is no wimp herself. She is not that annoying stereotyped character that automatically gives into the big masterful man at their first fight. Nope, she sure spins him in circles with her defiance and her strength of spirit.
~~ All around this book is awesome. The characters are great, the details of their environment is great, and the [love] scenes are to die for, very very hot. This story is a must read for all those who love this genre of romance.

Would have been good, but...
By Anonymous Reviewer
This was a descent read, but there were a few things in there that really ticked me off. First was the way that the sheik keeps insulting western society and putting it and its ways down. It really got on my nerves and started irritating me. The second was the demeaning way the sheik spoke of women. He puts it nicely, but he basically states, on more than one occasion, that women are meant to be submissive whores for a man once they're captured and tamed. Quite frankly, these things prevented me from enjoying the actual story. Aside from these complaints, I found this to just be another common girl falls for sheik story.

Heroine was wishy washy
By Lisa L
Well, this was an emotional book. One minute I loved it and the next moment I hated it. The heroine just got on my nerves. She changed her mind all the time. At least the hero was consistent in his behavior, though I did not like his behavior towards women and the west.
I think they both treated Chris, Beth's music producer badly and it was never resolved.

Unfair: The New Science of Criminal Injustice, by Adam Benforado

Our nation is founded on the notion that the law is impartial, that legal cases are won or lost on the basis of evidence, careful reasoning, and nuanced argument. But they may, in fact, turn on the camera angle of a defendant's taped confession, the number of photos in a mug shot book, or a simple word choice during a cross-examination. In Unfair, law professor Adam Benforado shines a light on this troubling new research, showing, for example, that people with certain facial features receive longer sentences and that judges are far more likely to grant parole first thing in the morning. In fact, over the last two decades, psychologists and neuroscientists have uncovered many cognitive forces that operate beyond our conscious awareness-and Benforado argues that until we address these hidden biases head-on, the social inequality we see now will only widen, as powerful players and institutions find ways to exploit the weaknesses in our legal system. Weaving together historical examples, scientific studies, and compelling court cases-from the border collie put on trial in Kentucky to the five teenagers who falsely confessed in the Central Park Jogger case-Benforado shows how our judicial processes fail to uphold our values and protect society's weakest members. With clarity and passion, he lays out the scope of the problem and proposes a wealth of reforms that could prevent injustice and help us achieve true fairness and equality before the law.

"In this important, deeply researched debut, [Benforado] draws on findings from psychology and neuroscience to show that police, jurors, and judges are generally guided by intuitive feelings rather than hard facts in making assessments...The new research challenges basic assumptions about most key aspects of the legal system, including eyewitness memory, jury deliberations, police procedures, and punishment...An original and provocative argument that upends our most cherished beliefs about providing equal justice under the law."
—Kirkus Reviews, starred

"This book suggests that criminal justice in the United States is not a system at all but a set of dysfunctional units that deliver biased decisions that make society less safe. Benforado deftly analyzes actual cases and recent studies in psychology and neuroscience to argue for broad-based reforms...A stimulating critique of today's criminal justice system with applications to recent cases in Ferguson, MO, and elsewhere...Authoritative and accessible."
—Library Journal, starred

"...a well-documented eye-opener."
—San Francisco Book Review

"Unfair succinctly and persuasively recounts cutting-edge research testifying to the faulty and inaccurate procedures that underpin virtually all aspects of our criminal justice system, illustrating many with case studies."
—The Boston Globe

"In Unfair, [Benforado] argues that most errors in criminal justice stem from the failure to take into account the frailties of human cognition, memory and decision-making…this is a book everyone in the legal profession should read, and the rest of us too, for it is as much about the confounding idiosyncrasies of everyday behaviour as inequity in law."
—New Scientist

“Benforado makes a compelling case, backed with reference to extensive scientific research, for [his] point of view in Unfair… Over and over again, Benforado demonstrates that basic assumptions underlying the criminal justice system are not supported by scientific evidence… [He] also reminds us of how far the practice of criminal justice has drifted from its ostensible goals… He is hopeful, however, that the system can be reformed, and the information in this book is offered in part toward that end. Unfair offers an excellent overview of an important body of information.”
—PopMatters

“Benforado is part of a rising chorus of academics, politicians, and those of us who work in the criminal justice system who are appalled by the fact that this country spends $60 billion a year on prisons and boasts the dubious honor of incarcerating more persons per capita than any other nation. In Unfair, Benforado does a wonderful job of describing the scope of the problem and of thinking creatively about how we can improve our criminal justice system.”
—The Federal Lawyer

“Insightful… one of the most important books written in a very long time.”
—Douglas Blackmon, Pulitzer Prize-winning author of Slavery by Another Name; American Forum

"Benforado's book is simply chock-full of eye-opening research and practical suggestions for improvement... Hopefully, [Unfair] will push us to take a step in [the right] direction."
—Greater Good

"No one denies that the criminal justice system should be based on reason and respect for our fellow humans, but Unfair compellingly insists that to do that will require accepting some uncomfortable truths. Every lawyer and judge working in the criminal justice system should read this book. Those who take it seriously will sleep uneasily for quite some time."
—JOTWELL

"As gripping as a Grisham novel, only it isn't fiction. With captivating cases and razor-sharp science, Adam Benforado puts the justice system on trial and makes a bulletproof argument that it's fundamentally broken. This extraordinary book is a must-read for every judge, lawyer, detective, and concerned citizen in America."
—Adam Grant, Wharton School of Business, and author of Give and Take

"In Unfair, Adam Benforado makes us aware of all our many imperfections when it comes to the judgment of others in our midst. He does so gently and with astonishing knowledge. Learning so much about our subconscious biases and the judicial system that exploits them is fascinating--and deeply troubling. But he goes further: he offers obtainable solutions, ones that we should race to effect, both within our own minds and in the human fates on which we bring our minds to bear."
—Jeff Hobbs, author of The Short and Tragic Life of Robert Peace

"Adam Benforado has written a book that will make you rethink everything you believe about crime and punishment. He gracefully blends science and storytelling to make a powerful case that our failure to bring the realities of human psychology into the courtroom has led to profound injustice. Enthralling and unsettling in equal measure, Unfair might be the most important book you read this year."
—Daniel H. Pink, author of Drive

"This thoughtful and penetrating study raises many deeply troubling questions, and even more important, offers humane and very reasonable approaches to cure some of the ills of a system of 'criminal injustice' that should not be tolerated."
—Noam Chomsky, Professor Emeritus, MIT

"Systems of justice are built by human brains. As such, they're subject to all the foibles of human psychology, from biased decision-making to xenophobia to false memories. With the eye of a scholar and the ear of a storyteller, Benforado marshals the burgeoning research to illuminate the nexus between law and the mind sciences."
—David Eagleman, Director of the Initiative on Neuroscience and Law, and author of Incognito

"Unfair is beautifully written, painstakingly researched, profoundly illuminating, and deeply disturbing. As evidence mounts that our criminal 'justice' system abounds with injustices, Benforado lays bare the systemic and psychological sources of its failures, weaving together compelling narrative and recent insights from the mind sciences. Unfair is must reading for anyone who cares about justice and, more important, for anyone who does not."
—Jon Hanson, Alfred Smart Professor of Law, Harvard Law School, and Faculty Director of the Project on Law and Mind Sciences and the Systemic Justice Project

"Unfair is a beautifully written book that manages to be both engrossing and important--a fascinating blend of psychological insight, legal know-how, and compelling storytelling. If you've ever wondered why the legal system doesn't work as well as it should, Benforado's intelligent take on the relationship between human psychology and the law will enlighten you--and leave you hopeful that we're capable of doing better."
—Adam Alter, NYU Stern School of Business, and author of Drunk Tank Pink

"Unfair is an engaging, eye-opening read. By weaving together the latest findings in psychology and neuroscience with real-world stories of justice gone wrong, Unfair sheds new light on how easy it is for unconscious biases to wreak havoc on the criminal justice system and the steps that can be taken to make the system fairer."
—Sian Beilock, University of Chicago Professor of Psychology, and author of Choke and How the Body Knows Its Mind

"Unfair is an incisive look at the problems that arise in the legal system because of the way people think as well as the prospects for meaningful reform. Adam Benforado has written an engaging and masterful book on one of the most important issues society has to face."
—Art Markman, Professor of Psychology, University of Texas, author of Smart Thinking and Smart Change

"In this provocative critique of the American criminal justice system, Adam Benforado demonstrates beyond a reasonable doubt that unfair outcomes aren't tragic exceptions--they're the rule, and human psychology is to blame. Bringing together cutting-edge research with insights from real life cases, Benforado shows us how our hidden biases undermine our guarantee of fairness and equality under the law, and offers much-needed solutions."
—Philip Zimbardo, author of The Lucifer Effect

"It's surprisingly easy to look back at high-profile criminal proceedings and see the flaws, while taking the overall system for granted. Adam Benforado looks across the whole canvas, elucidating through empirical data and scientific research how our own legal structures measure up--or, more accurately, don't--to our values of justice and fairness. Criminal law in the United States is far from perfect, and Benforado's thorough, thought-provoking examination is a welcome step in identifying and preventing institutionalized injustice."
—Jonathan Zittrain, George Bemis Professor in Law, Harvard Law School

"In this fascinating book, Adam Benforado sheds new light from just about every angle on our criminal justice system. Practitioners, policy makers and everyday citizens will learn much about a subject that demands greater public debate."
—Tom Perriello, former Representative, United States Congress

"Unlike fields such as economics or philosophy, judicial theory and practice has largely ignored relevant findings about the human mind coming out of behavioral neuroscience and social psychology. This timely and important book can help us bring our criminal justice system into the 21st Century."
—Edward Slingerland, Co-director of the Centre for the Study of Human Evolution, Cognition and Culture and author of Trying Not to Try

"An admirable collection of compelling stories about what is wrong with the criminal justice system.”
—Christian Century

Fantastic! A Science-Based Look at Our Criminal System
By Book Shark
Unfair: The New Science of Criminal Injustice by Adam Benforado

“Unfair" is a fantastic, well-researched look at what is at the heart of our unfair criminal system. Law professor Adam Benforado has provided the public with an eye-opening gem grounded on the best current science, historical court cases and insightful research. He explores the nature of the criminal mind, eyewitness memory, jury deliberations, police procedures, and intuitions about punishment. This enlightening 402-page book includes twelve chapters broken out into the following four parts: I. Investigation, II. Adjudication, III. Punishment, and IV. Reform.

Positives:
1. A well written, well-researched book that is grounded on sound logic and good science.
2. A fascinating topic, the new science of our unfair criminal justice system.
3. Mastery of a complex topic and innate ability to educate and enlighten at an accessible level.
4. I love the tone and pace of this book. Benforado is very careful not to oversell the benefits of science while at the same time clearly showing what good research has uncovered and the shortcomings of our system. Kudos!
5. A clearly defined theme, “Injustice is built into our legal structures and influences outcomes every minute of every day. And its origins lie not inside the dark heart of a bigoted police officer or a scheming D.A. but within the mind of each and every one of us.” Intriguing.
6. Provides many interesting cases and immerses sound logic and science into each one. David Rosenbaum’s story illustrates an unacceptable chain of mistakes. “The physical disgust they felt may have generated an explanation for David’s condition that involved lack of discipline and poor character—drunkenness—rather than another potential cause: a stroke, seizure, diabetes, head injury, or drug interaction. And once the ETOH label was attached, David was in trouble.”
7. Confirmation bias and its impact to our criminal system. “Once David was labeled a drunk, the responders and medical professionals appeared to focus on finding evidence that supported that description.”
8. A fascinating look at false confessions and what leads to them. “False confessions and incriminating statements are the leading contributors to wrongful homicide convictions, present in over 60 percent of the known DNA murder-exoneration cases in the United States. More broadly, they appear to have been a factor in about 25 percent of all post-conviction exonerations.”
9. Great use of neuroscience. “Some scientists have claimed that roughly half of the variability in antisocial traits across the population comes down to the genes that people are born with. All things being equal, if you have a Y chromosome, you are several times more likely to engage in violent criminal behavior. And psychopaths and pedophiles are both disproportionately men. But it can be hard to separate out the impact of genes from social factors: after all, men and women are subjected to very different arrays of experiences and expectations.”
10. A look at how lawyers break the rules and what can be done about it. “We should worry, then, about the enormous control that prosecutors have over the state’s evidence and witnesses: they are the ones who decide if and when the defendant’s team will receive the ballistics report or the DNA report or a copy of the witness statement or the initial police write-up.” “Research suggests that the more prosecutors are focused on winning, rather than on achieving justice, the more likely they will be to act dishonestly.”
11. The role of juries. “Of course, the faith we have in our own perceptions and our cynical discrediting of those with whom we disagree can create trouble even when a jury does get to consider the case. As jurors, we are often oblivious to how our own preexisting commitments, beliefs, and biases shape our impressions, but we quickly and easily spot them influencing others.”
12. Surprising findings and tidbits used throughout the book. “Recent research suggests that a person’s weight can influence juror assessments, with male jurors more likely to reach a guilty verdict when the accused is an overweight woman than when she is thin.”
13. So how reliable is our memory? “There is, for instance, compelling evidence that eyewitness identifications are frequently inaccurate. When the actual perpetrator appears in a lineup along with several innocent fillers, witnesses fail to pick anyone out about a third of the time.”
14. The impact of race. “Research suggests that people are 50 percent more likely to make an error in identifying a person from another race, although individuals who have a lot of contact with the other race tend to be more accurate.”
15. Great stuff on separating truth from untruth. “Overall, it turns out that we are quite bad at ferreting out deception. In a recent analysis of more than two hundred studies, participants were able to identify lies and truths correctly just 54 percent of the time, only marginally better than chance.”
16. An excellent chapter on judging. “Although she was forced to retreat from her statements about how gender and ethnicity influence judging, Justice Sotomayor was right: identities and personal experiences do “affect the facts that judges choose to see.”
17. So what drives us to punish? “Indeed, there is a growing scientific consensus that it is a desire for retribution—not deterrence or incapacitation—that has the strongest influence on why we punish.”
18. A look at prison life. Ugly facts. “A country that abolished slavery 150 years ago now has a greater number of black men in the correctional system than there were slaves in 1850 and a greater percentage of its black population in jail than was imprisoned in apartheid South Africa. Black, male, and no high school diploma? It’s more likely than not that you will spend time in prison during your life.”
19. Compelling arguments on what we can do to improve our society. “The starting point of any reform comes in understanding and accepting this reality. We all need to look at the criminal justice system through new eyes. So, raising awareness about psychology and neuroscience research is critical.”
20. Notes and a formal bibliography included.

Negatives:
1. I have one main negative, the lack of links to notes. A real shame since I’m one of those readers who loves to dig deeper into the references. That being said, I’ve read and reviewed a number of books that makes references to such research and Benforado is on point.
2. Charts and diagrams would have complemented this excellent narrative.

In summary, I absolutely loved this book! It has two of my favorite subjects fused into one, where science meets our criminal system and all that it implies. Benforado won me over with his mastery of this fascinating topic, great pacing, and excellent insights and dare I say judicial use of the best of our current science. It’s been a while since I’ve read a book this good, kudos. I can’t recommend this book enough.

Justice vs. The Law: Challenging the U.S. Criminal Legal System
By Matt Mansfield
This is the kind of investigation that is not going to be very satisfying, well, for a lot of people and for a lot of reasons.

Adam Benforado’s 2015 thought-provoking book, “Unfair: the New Science of Criminal Injustice,” raises many questions regarding players and practices in the U.S. criminal legal system. And ultimately, whether justice for the individual citizen is being served.

Using specific recent cases and incidents, the author explores the inherent conflict between the law as an ideal and the pragmatic practices used to manage the huge daily caseload moving through the local police bureaus, courts and prisons.

Benforado, currently an associate professor of law at Drexel University and previously a federal appellate law clerk and attorney for Jenner & Block, systematically reviews each phase of the criminal legal system using specific cases to illustrate his points at each stage:

• Part I covers Investigation: the victim, the detective and the suspect are each examined in terms of what they thought happened, how their views might be changed and some eye-opening insights about police interrogation practices and when Miranda protection might not apply.
• Part II digs into Adjudication, or the trial stage of a case, how lawyers, experts, even the judges, can impact the subconscious recall and interpretations of witnesses and juries. It is especially interesting to see how “voir dire”, the examination of potential jurors, can be manipulated.
• Part III goes into Punishment on the technical and personal levels as well as the seeming indifference of the public, once sentence has been passed, to the dehumanization of those serving time, rightly or wrongly (take a look at my April 16, 2014 Amazon review of David Dow’s “The Autobiography of an Execution” for more technical and emotional insights).
• The last section presents recommendations by the author to help reduce some of the learned and subconscious human biases that are in conflict with what we want to believe the law – and our professed ideals – should be doing, e.g. even treatment for all citizens.

The author writes in a clean, easy to follow style with some entertaining examples of older historical cases and why people may have accepted then what seems preposterous to us today. However, Benforado is making the point that we may have only changed the legal window-dressing to disguise our deeper motives for resolving conflicts with an “absolute” justified outcome.

That said, initially I found Benforado’s drawing on social science studies such as Stanley Milgram’s experiments to be helpful points for his arguments about intelligent people getting off track under certain authoritarian conditions.

However, as the narrative developed, the references seemed to be supporting a larger social view regarding the need to overcome prejudice in American society. And distracting from the main thrust, namely, how can the legal system be improved to provide justice more uniformly for all.

Perhaps it’s a little bit of both: deeper, darker personal motives distorting and justifying the pragmatism needed to execute the ideal law on a large social scale.

If you do delve into “Unfair,” and you probably should before your next jury summons arrives, I can assure you will never watch another episode of “CSI” the same way again.

And that may be a blessing.

A Book That Actually Says Something - 5 Stars, Highly Recommended
By Bradley Bevers
Simply put, one of the best non-fiction books I have read in a long time. The author has put together a fascinating book on crime, the legal actors involved, and the problems that result. As a layman, I thought that tone and pacing were near perfect and most of the material was new to me. It seems many of the applied psychology books that come out are interesting and insightful, but rarely actually say anything. This book is different - the author has an agenda and is not afraid to push it. While I don't agree with all of his conclusions and some of his recommendations seem too far-fetched, it is refreshing to read a book that actually has something to say.

Here are a few of the more interesting points the author makes:

* Eyewitness testimony, and human memory, is flawed
* False confessions are not only possible but common. Scary statistics (60% of DNA exonerations involved false or incriminating confessions).
* Why prisons don't work very well
* How everyone is biased, and what we can do about it
* How to make the court system more fair, including some radical ideas (virtual courtrooms for example)
* Damning evidence on the true unfairness of the system and who its tilted towards

With a book that is willing to jump into the fray so completely, there were some points that I disagreed with as well. The author's proposal of a shift away from blame, the belief that there is not real evil in the world, and some of his proposals (like virtual prisons) feel like a big stretch. Regardless of what you think of those things or the other proposals made, you will be forced to think and think deeply with this book.

Highly recommended.
