Some great tours of the sky!

This is a thick book heavy on content and true to its purpose: to help the novice amateur astromoner learn how to navigate the sky without the aid of motorized GOTO computers or setting circles. The work contains about 24 starhops, most of which are fairly lengthy and take two hours or longer to complete if observing leisurely.
Although the text is a bit dry and not as enjoyable to work through as in MacRoberts' wonderfully descriptive and similar work "Star-Hopping for Backyard Astronomers", the emphasis in this book is on *empirical star-hopping practice*. Once you complete the exercises in this book you *will* have gained a subconscious feel for navigating the skies with your scope. Traditional star-hopping becomes second nature and loses its daunting aspect.
I feel that all amateur astronomers should have this skill down pat. It makes your observing immeasurably easier because you have an intuitive "feel" for which direction and how far to move your scope.
The maps are well done but do not completely reflect the text. Sometimes objects are discussed in the text but don't appear on the map. Also, the maps are not at near a large enough scale to make the star-hops fully straightforward. For the dimmer DSOs in his tours (and there are many of them), I highly advise the reader to purchase a solid Mag 8.5 or deeper star atlas to accompany this book, such as Tirion's Sky Atlas 2000.0 2nd Ed.
Overall, recommended over MacRoberts' book for serious training and experience in this skill. Rank beginners will want to start with something easier, like MacRoberts or the excellent Turn Left at Orion.

Great guide for novice and experienced alike

Garfinkle's book is a first-rate introduction into "star-hopping," the practice of using patterns of stars to find interesting objects in the night sky. He has a couple of chapters that provide useful tips for the novice--such as judging the field of view of a view finder--but then he dives right in. He adopts a constellation-based approach, marching around the major stars in a constellation to find the stellar and deep sky objects within. He is cosmopolitan in his interests, highlighting double, multiple and variable stars as well as every possible deep sky object accessible to amateur telescopes. His text is so full of information and folklore that it can almost be distracting: did you really need to know the exact spectral class of Deneb? Nevertheless, his guides and maps are outstanding and the tours he assembles are just GREAT. To my knowledge, there is nothing like them in the literature. His tours of Cygnus, Sagitarius, and Lyra got me hooked on telescope astronomy, and I return to them again and again. It would take years of dedicated effort to exhaust the richness of this book.
The main strength of Garfinkle's approach--the constellation-based approach--is also its main weakness. This is because fascinating objects a view-finder or two away from the constellation in questions are either discussed in some chapter other than the one in hand or are not discussed at all. This can be frustrating if you are an experienced star-hopper. Garfinkle compensates for this by identifying so much of interest in each of his star hops that you probably won't care. If you do, an excellent companion to "Star Hopping" is "Discover the Stars" by Richard Berry, which touches upon a small fraction of the objects discussed by Garfinkle but presents a broader swipe of the sky.

The feature that recommends this book is the road-map approach to viewing objects in a constellation beyond the standard show-pieces. The author includes all kinds of fascinating background information, and you end up seeing things you would otherwise pass by. First-rate.

About the Author
Nancy Scoggin has taught instrumental music and AP Music Theory in Joshua, Texas for 32 years. Ms. Scoggin was born in Utica, New York, raised in Bradenton, Florida, and graduated with her music degree from the University of Southern Mississippi in Hattiesburg. After teaching in Natchez, Mississippi for 6 years she moved to Texas to pursue her masters degree at the University of North Texas and began teaching in the small town of Joshua, located just south of the Fort Worth/Dallas metropolitan area. She began teaching AP Music Theory in 1997 and soon became a consultant for the College Board. She is now a frequent instructor at AP summer institutes throughout the Southwest Region. She also enjoys being an AP Reader and finds the experience "an opportunity to meet with other AP music theory teachers from high schools and colleges around the country and share stories, insights and strategies. Teaching AP Music Theory has become one of my passions!" She also enjoys volunteering at Bass Performance Hall in Fort Worth, attending local opera and symphony performances, gardening, and playing with her four-legged family.

AP Music Theory

The AP Music Theory Class I teach, switched to the Nancy Scoggin book after trying another text for a year. I am so pleased with this book. The kids can understand it and learn. We had a 100% pass rate last year. Not sure if we are going to repeat that rate but it was great for the students. The 2nd addition adds extra exercises. I had a chance to attend an AP Music Theory workshop taught by Nancy Scoggin. She is great. If you get a chance, be sure to attend. The great thing about the book, is it gives the reader, strategies for passing the test. If the reader will just learn the material and follow all the hints in the book, they will pass the test. For teachers, you will need to add some addition material for your class, but this book is so much better than the "big name textbook" we used the first year. I would buy both the first and second edition because you will have two extra AP tests that you can give to students or use in your instruction.

Wonderful Book

This is my - well, second favorite book as far as human potential goes - after "Life and Teaching of the Masters of the Far East" by Baird T. Spalding. This book, though, brings people who have developed some extraordinary abilities into the present tense.

As another reviewer noted, the author does repeat quite often "China is so great" tune, but it is also true that a lot of countries in the East have greater awareness and appreciation for working with energy, and have been cultivating it to a greater extent than people in the West. In the West, these awareness begin to spread more in the recent years. It was often put down by those who are immersed in studying the world as if nothing other than material world existed. From this book, though, it is obvious that even in China, there are many people who, due to lack of understanding that mind influences the energy which then expresses in physical dimension, they also had conflicts with accepting the reality of what they witnessed.

The author has correctly pointed out that when you use whatever mind-power you are able to express and when you take care to develop it - it grows - when you don't use it - it diminishes. This is true regardless of what skills any person may be using. It is also a way of economy in nature.

While there are few quotations in this book from the Yellow Emperor's Classic of Internal Medicine - as in "Be imperturbable and the true chi will come to you", this idea is not unique either to China or to Buddhism, it is a spiritual truth presented throughout all spiritual traditions. India's "Yoga Sutras of Patanjali" is yet another book that deals with development of different abilities, yet the idea is that one should not focus on development of special abilities (siddhis), but rather just focus on realizing Oneness (Self-Realization). This state of Oneness is in Christian Bible called entering the "Kingdom of God" - the method described as loving this Infinite Loving Power and Intelligence with all one's mind, heart, soul and strength. The goal of alchemy - either Eastern (Taoist) or Western is again realizing this state of Oneness and from this state, the powers begin to emerge spontaneously when needed. These powers are also intended to be used in service, out of love, not for selfish goals.

The highest visible vibration of this One Power - the Source of All Energy - is Light - so appropriately the method used to unleash these powers to which every human being does have access are meditations on the Light. With a quite a bit of children, mentioned in this book, who were helped in this process of unfolding inner power - it took only one such session to produce remarkable results.

The book mentions how there are many more women (girls) who have these "special powers" than men (boys). This is not all that surprising because it is generally considered that women's "heart centers" are more open than men's and Love is the highest feeling vibration, Love is the essential quality of this Infinite Energy.

The author then mentions how they have noticed that with most children these "special" powers begin to diminish after puberty. This may also not be surprising because a certain leakage of energy occurs due to loss of blood (menstruation) in women and loss of semen (in men) and I might add that for this reason, there are special practices in Taoist Alchemy to prevent these leakage and to preserve the energy. After all - all of these special abilities are based on "playing with energy" - opening the channels within to let it flow, generating it and directing it. Focusing upon - meditating upon the Source of All of this Energy is one way to connect with it and let it express - different forms of qigong energy cultivation and manipulation exercises are another.

Found an answer for every question I had about Lymphoedema

The book is an invaluable resource if one wants to know more about lymphoedema (localized fluid retention and tissue swelling), its possible causes, types, risk factors for the development and ways to minimize the risk of lymphoedema. There are plenty of useful information on the effect of lymphoedema on the skin and dealing with skin problems. A lot of attention is given to treatments for lymphoedema as a combination of manual compression lymphatic massage, compression garments (types of garments) and bandaging. Also, I found plenty of information about exercises, lymph drainage massage and additional treatments used in the management of lymphoedema.
Additionally, I have to admit that there are plenty of real life case scenarios, great references and websites for further reading. The book is well written and organized. Thank you

About the Author
Matthew is the best-selling author of CyberStorm and the six-part hit series Atopia Chronicles. Good Doomsday / End of the World Book

This is really a tale of two books - the first 90% was great and, without having a spoiler, the last 5-10% was a little disappointing as if the author changed gears in the story or was tired of writing. The author does a great job of getting you into the minds of the characters, and paints a picture of a possible cyber meltdown I found realistic and quite frightening if it were to occur. You feel the raw emotions of the characters as they have their highs and lows (a lot of lows and suffering), and I had a hard time putting it down.

I picked this up for 99 cents in the Kindle store, and despite my comment above on the last 5-10% of the novel I enjoyed it, and certainly received a heck of a lot more entertainment value than 99 cents. If you like to read realistic doomsday-type fiction, I would recommend this one!

It's The Apocalypse...er...Wait

Like many others, I wanted to like this book. But I found myself being more irritated than spellbound. The book reads as though the author cut and pasted from his "Deep Thoughts" Pinterest board. And the dialogue sounds like those stilted "Law & Order SVU" conversations where the cast says things like "Everybody knows that 43% of all males wear boxers." So natural sounding.
There are continuity issues, such as when Mike states that no one is leaving the apartment building anymore, but in the next scene, he's out running another futile errand. That is, when he's not gazing at his wife and son with just so damn much love he can't stand it and declaring that everything he's done, he's done for them. Well, that was what Walter White said, but Walter: (A) Actually did stuff and (B) was interesting about it.
Fortunately, Mike has a best friend and neighbor in Chuck. Chuck is a Progressive Survivalist, because, well I don't know how that happens. But he's the guy you want to know in a crisis. Chuck has a storage locker the apartment building that must be the size of Charles Foster Kane's cellar. He has generators, night vision goggles, artillery, conventional weapons and I don't know what all down there. Helpful!
The group finally manages to get out of New York, past a military checkpoint. This is drama free since the hero sleeps through it. They go to Chuck's mountain cabin, because of course he has a cabin. Heck, he may have had it in his storage locker. Things don't get much better there. Apparently, a bunch of New Yorkers can't figure out how to hunt and fish. I guess Chuck only trained himself for urban survival. Mike has yet another hare-brained idea to walk to D.C. to find rescue. He makes it, managing to avoid meaningful conversation with anyone, despite being in the company of countless other "refugees". Instead, he surmises that America has been invaded by the Chinese, so he just comes on home, having accomplished nothing as usual.
Right about here, the author gets tired of his own tedious story. His Pinterst Boards were empty, his arms got tired, he was late for supper...everything turned out okay,everyone was wrong about everything, global climate change, Chinese are our friends. And everyone charged their devices and lived happily ever after!

A stand out

Apparently this book is to be made into a film by 20th Century Fox. I will certainly watch it.

The thing I like best about this book is that the characters are so well fleshed out. They make mistakes and each of them acts according to their values, just as any ordinary human would. And more interestingly, each makes decisions that are limited by what they know. This is something that few other authors can pull off. But information is not always common, and common knowledge is not always correct, and the ways individuals use knowledge is extremely diverse. Mather gets this.

He also gets communication. I have NEVER before experienced fiction that could cause me physical symptoms - but somehow Mather achieved it. His descriptions of hunger were so effective that I felt hungry. Really hungry. Even though I had eaten. Dieters should not be put off the book as a whole, but there is one chapter that had me reaching for a second lunch and some snacks, even though I'm not a big eater. That's real writing skill.

Although Cyberstorm works as a stand-alone book, there is apparently a follow-up (Darknet), which is not yet available via Amazon Kindle. I'm a bit disappointed that I have to wait for it, but the anticipation is good too. I really can't imagine what Mather will do that can beat Cyberstorm.

Gene A. Getz is pastor emeritus at Chase Oaks Church in Plano, Texas, and director of the Center for Church Renewal. He is the author/editor of the Life Essentials Study Bible and airs a two-minute daily "Principle to Live By" on numerous radio stations. Gene has been married to his wife, Elaine, for over sixty years.

Great collection of methods and designs!

This a very nice collection of patterns. The book has a lot of how-to advice that I benifited from even though I'm fairly experienced in intarsia. My only wish is the patterns be printed to scale even if it took dividing them up into 4-5 pages but some are so big I suppose it would be reasonably more expensive to publish. (My printer/copier dosen't let me scale them like my old one would.)
I've never seen a better intarsia book!

Kathy Wise is the very best of the commercial Intarsia Artists and this book is an excellent example of her artwork. If you love sculpting wood and the use of exotic woods she gives you the best of her inventory in patterns and creations in her newest book.
