*I received this book from the author, via Goodreads, in exchange for an honest review*

This is a story of Jake, a normal teenage boy trying to live a normal teenage life. He deals with insecurity, learns to appreciate family, and learns to love...
Then some very unexpected things happen to him, and he must learn to cope, or not.

This book is both funny and sad, hopeful and tragic.

There were only a few things that I didn't like about the book. The author had me very confused as to Jake's actual age. Sometimes I felt that he was perhaps a middle school kid, reading some of the character's thought processes. The first half of the book was slow going, for me at least. And, I know this is just me, but I live in the US, so some of the British slang and mannerisms were unnerving. I like to understand what I am reading, so I found myself looking alot of things up, so I would know what they meant.

I was upset that Jake's parents acted so irresponsibly, Dad in particular. I know the drinking age in the UK is 18, but it is still reprehensible for a parent to tell his 15 yo son that it is ok to "have a beer or two" while babysitting! And then Jake blames himself, and very few people correct him, and NO ONE gets him any psychological counseling.

I liked that we are told all the mundane, boring bits, so that we know Jake's life is a normal one. A typical teenage boy. Then you're hit with a twist so big, you may feel a bit like you've been sucker-punched. The author has written all of the characters so well, and so complex, you will feel as if you are in the story with them.

Overall, I think the book was well written, and would recommend it to my kids. But if you don't like disturbing content, you should probably skip it, as this book covers a fair amount of tragedy.

Painfully real and achingly moving account of a teenage boy

I read 'Jake' over the course of a week and, during that time, the character really got under my skin. Throughout a lot of the book, nothing spectacular actually happens. It's a fairly mundane account of a teenager growing up in family and school life. This is not a negative, though. The writing is beautiful and perfectly captures the thoughts of a teenage boy, his awkwardness around family, friends and his new girlfriend. It feels very true to real life and, at times, it is painfully real.

The ordinary day-to-day descriptions of Jake's life could be seen as being slightly repetitive, but for me it was a master-stroke and Jake's whole existence had an undercurrent of impending tragedy. But, there are lots of small smiles to be raised in the book, especially in Jake's relationship with his brother, Ben, which is genuinely tender and achingly touching. Jake's relationships with his family and friends are all too real and believable. This is perhaps what makes the last quarter of the book all the more shocking and tragic.

Be warned, this isn't an uplifting read, but it is written with real skill and feeling. I was incredibly moved by Jake's story and it is well worth a look.

An interesting story

Jake is just an ordinary boy who wants to be liked.

This sentence sums up Jake pretty well. The story of Jake is the story of a pretty ordinary teenage boy going through his ordinary day to day life. I think that is what makes this book interesting, the fact that Jake is just like the kid next door...or just like you. He has a good home, a nice life, and satisfying friendships. He is not some secret superpower waiting to be discovered - he's just Jake.

The characters are well written and believable. Jake's little brother Ben is cute. I think it is hard to write kids and make them credible, but the author is able to do it here.

Overall I enjoyed this story, though it was a bit depressing. I guess life is sometimes, though. The beginning was a bit slow for me, but as Jake's story continued things and people's lives started weaving together and created an interesting narrative.

Other authors seem to have chosen to focus their analyses on either knowledge or learning - or, limited their assessments to the individual, group, or organizational level of analysis. Organizational Learning: Creating, Retaining and Transferring Knowledge provides a more comprehensive and integrative approach. Some authors would argue that knowledge and learning are modern discoveries. Prof. Argote provides an evenhanded assessment of what is new, and what is supported by decades of past research.
I believe this book is appropriate for anyone wanting to understand the basis of our beliefs regarding organizational knowledge and learning. I have just finished using this book as background for a paper on knowledge and virtual teams. I also will be using sections in my MBA course on Organizational Design.

A tremendous achievement

Linda Argote not only summarizes what is know about organizational learning but also integrates her own creative research into the mix. Her research on pizza franchises is legendary, and in this book she shows why. Using innovative methods in shipyards, truck factories, airplane factors, pizza shops, and elsewhere, Argote derives propositions and puts them to the test.
I particularly liked her discussion of organizational memory and forgetting. What a great notion -- organizations CAN forget things! -- and Argote shows just how quickly that can happen.
This book belongs on the shelf of every scholar and manager interested in how organizations learn (and forget).

It's just enormously crammed with good social advice, good practical tips and advice, and without question there is a deeper ethos that one picks up while reading through these various items. . . the notion that personal happiness comes through cheerful service to others, that helping others is vital in life, and that moderating our unruly desires is actually a far more positive thing than just letting yourself go.

There's even useful business leadership advice here, along with romantic advice. It's just all good.

H. Jackson Brown has sold tons of copies of this, and actually performed a really good thing for society in writing this.

I'm pleased to see the new edition; I've been ordering and reordering this for years to give as gifts, and keep a copy in the car.

This is a great book just to have. While you won't agree with everything in the book, it's nice to read maybe once a year or every so often. Puts the little things into perspective. Whenever I see someone posting sayings like these on social media, it usually makes my skin crawl. You didn't come up with this saying, don't post it. However, when you actually read them straight out of a book, they carry more meaning.

Jeremy Puma is a Gnostic philosopher who practices a crazy, mixed-up spirituality based on the writings found in the Nag Hammadi Library and Zen Buddhism. He writes for people interested in a simple, mature approach to gnosis that doesn't rely on unprovable claims of apostolic succession or New Age neo-Templar silliness, but instead acknowledges the limitations of the material. He prefers a simple, direct style as opposed to the hoity-toity "thee and thou" filled silliness of more popular neognostic organizations, and doesn't think you need fancy hats or magic wands to be a Gnostic. For this reason, he will always be broke and marginal, at best, but that's okay. Jeremy currently resides in Seattle, Washington. He is available for speaking engagements, complimentary meals, and children's parties.

Do-it-yourself religion at its best

Those who have followed Jeremy Puma's writing career know him for his no-nonsense style and spiritual integrity. In this latest effort, Jeremy provides prayers and rituals for those drawn toward the "Sethian" Gnostic tradition. This is not a naive attempt to re-animate ancient Sethianism. Rather, it is the work of a modern spiritual practitioner working with respect for what we know of the Gnostic groups and texts of the early Christian era, but not afraid to bring his own insights to the table. One needs no elaborate vestments or secret transmissions to use Jeremy's prayerbook. Rather, one simply has to summon the nerve (a certain amount of nerve being required for practices which demand transformation!) and take up the work. Even if one is not inclined to pursue this particular Gnostic path, Jeremy's prayerbook is a fine example of a manual for an individual or a small group working outside mainstream religious institutions and professionalized ministry. As such, it points an important way forward and deserves serious attention.

A Fresh No-nonsense Perspective

I am very thankful to have recently found Mr. Puma's books and I'm going to note up front this review is actually for three of the books I have read, but mostly for "How to Think Like a Gnostic", which I feel is a companion and sort of introduction to his other book "This Way: Gnosis without 'Gnosticism'". These along with "A Gnostic Prayerbook" and honestly all of Jeremy's writings consistently convey his approach which is why I'm writing one review for all three books.

"How to Think Like a Gnostic," along with "This Way: Gnosis without 'Gnosticism'" along with the other works by Jeremy Puma bring something new and fresh to Gnostic study and praxis that I think provide a very necessary approach in spirituality in general - that of sincere and heartfelt honesty tempered by life experience. In this book Jeremy lays out his hard-won ideology and practices of a subject that is most often confusing and full of so many lacunae (missing parts) that it is nearly undecipherable for any kind of 'real-world-view' (that is a loaded hyphenate right there), especially for those like me, just starting to try and figure this out for the Nth time. I've found in my experiences in trying to delve into Gnostic Studies that one must subscribe to one of two camps (and to some degree flounder around in both): 1) The purely academic view, which tries to pick apart, word by word, what, who and if these so-called 'gnostic Christians' were, OR 2) A modern, but often very questionable (in my eyes at least) 'Gnostic Ecclesia' - groups that often falsely proclaim some grand, but again questionable at best, apostolic succession to a fantastical and quite possibly 'mythic' original group of people from the first couple of centuries of the Christian era (meaning mythic in the sense of our modern understanding of them). I'm not going to get into details about my views on this but I have found both to be somewhat flawed ways of approaching the spirit what was behind true Gnostic thought and practice.

What Jeremy Puma presents in his writing is an honest, often humorous, yet learned approach to the cosmology, ideology, and practices of the Gnostics, stripped of any superfluous baggage or hidden agendas seen as so prevalent in many of the quasi-masonic, occult or new-age groups around the turn of the 20th century that are still existent today and often claim to be the true lineal heirs of the Gnostics of old. He provides an honest approach that he readily admits to be his own and that others may not agree with - putting it out there to 'take it or leave it.' Yet, what is Gnosticism without this type of mentality? What other teachers can there be but those who share their hard-won knowledge for others to assimilate and work out for themselves?

As such, Jeremy Puma's works hit the mark and I have found much delight in reading them (and re-reading them). They are a great starting point and a landmark with which to start looking into all of the other materials available on the subject. They present a way of looking at the world around us and how to process all types of knowledge and information and hopefully apply it in our lives.

For those who want a tradition that is spelled out for them, this might not be the final say in the matter (but still a suggested read before joining any group that does have it 'spelled out'). For those trying to find a buoy in the great sea of Gnostic studies, this is it!

I am very happy to have found this book. It covers prayer as well as ritual, and such things as Holy Water and Oil. As far as formalized prayer, there seems to be one for every occasion. I bought two more for extras for the church.
