This book is well written, engaging, and educational. The author supplies an in depth analysis using empirical research and personal life experiences to supply a vast amount of applicable dating advice for males. Although this book is intended for a male audience, I (being female) still found it to be a great read! It was very refreshing to read respectable dating advice for men. I'm a 26 year old guy that struggled with women for a majority of my life. After reading Social Savant, I had questions answered that I didn't even know I wanted to ask. The author clearly lays out how women think and then gives his personal experiences to hammer the concepts home. I highly recommend this book for people trying to be more confident and successful with women

About the Author
Joseph Jean Baptiste Laurent Arban was born at Lyons, France, February 28, 1825. He entered the Conservatory at an early age, taking up the study of the trumpet under Dauverne, and won first prize in 1845. His military term was spent in the navy on board the "La Belle Poule." whose chief musician, Paulus, became Chief Musician of the Garde a Paris during the reign of Napoleon III. He was the most brilliant cornet player of his time, and his astonishing performance and triumphant concert tours throughout Europe were the means of establishing the value cornet as one of the most popular of all musical instruments. Arban's artistic ideals, sound musicianship and invaluable instructive principles were perpetuated in his splendid Method for the Cornet, which as succeeded in maintaining the very highest position among similar instructive works and which has never been surpassed in point of practical superiority or artistic plan.

Great edition of a great volume!

This book is by almost all accounts the Bible of the trumpet world. It is comprehensive, and cognitive in its presentation. There are several hundred pages of practice score and a good amount of comments to guide.

This particular edition is a worthwhile purchase as it is spiral comb bound, so it lays open better, it is chock full of updated, editorial comments that explain and clarify some of the things Arban said that don't apply or possibly don't, and it includes a cd with accompaniment for the practices in the book.

Great book, well worth the price!

Excellent music book for advanced high school/College/ semi to Pro players. The binder makes this book much easier to use and flip the pages. If one can play all these exercises without missing a note. That person can play with any musical group anywhere anytime.

If you're buying one, might as well make it this one.

I'm a trumpet player. I've had the same Arban for many years now and it is on its last leg. I wanted to get a new copy since I still play out of it for many of my maintenance routines and thought, why not give this one a try. Basically you get a different binding and an accompaniment CD for the 12 fantaisies and variations. Other than that and the new cover, it's the same.
I wouldn't buy this one unless you need a new one or don't own one.

Easiest of the deep psychological tests to self administer

I have no clear idea of exactly why the Luscher color test works, I simply know that, in my own case, it proved incredibly accurate. It is amazing that a simple selection sequence of eight colored cards could reveal so much about internal anxieties, compensations, and conflicts. Yet, there definately is a correlation with these inner states and color preference.

This is probably the easiest of the deep psychological tests to administer and interpret. It is not a game and is not to be used carelessly or improperly. In fact, I first heard about it in graduate school when I overheard one of the psychology professors go ballistic when he found that the undergraduates were administering the test to each other. He wasn't upset because he thought it was nonsense, on the contrary, he was upset because he knew it to be a deep and powerful tool with the potential to do great damage if misused.

One further warning, if you buy an older edition of this book make sure that: #1 the eight cards are included, and #2 that they are not too badly faded.

Oh yes, the text states that this test is still accurate even if you are color blind!

Wow! Who Knew

Back in the 80's(my favorite time) I was going to this convention on survival preparedness and being the kid I was I was drawn to this what I thought was a video game, after plunking in my 50 cents and started the system up I found out that this was some type of test so I preceded on and after I picked my colors two different times it gave me a pretty detailed version of who I was. To say the least I was very impressed and I started to research this thing called the color test, back then it was hard to find information on it but I finally came across the Luscher color test and bought the book many years ago. I practiced it many times but after moving a few times and losing track of my stuff I had lost the book, funny thing is I never gave it much thought until recently and once again could not remember the name of the book but after a little search on the Net, I once again found it on Amazon and bought it. I highly recommend this book, it is a fun way to get to know yourself on a deeper level, but if you want the real color test given my Luscher himself you will pay over a $100 dollars for the test but it is more detailed and more rewarding. Useful introduction to the ideas of leading strategy experts

There are plenty of books available on strategy, but most business leaders do not have a lot of time to read them. Where can you go to get a reasonably-priced introduction to the ideas of some of the leading experts on business strategy? This book provides one possible answer. It includes essays on strategy and the five competitive forces by Michael Porter, building a vision by Collins and Porras, blue ocean strategy by Kim and Mauborgne, and the balanced scorecard by Kaplan and Norton.

Although I found the essays by each of the above-mentioned authors less inspiring and enlightening than their books on the same subjects, this compilation does give a good introduction to their ideas, and will help the reader discern whether to take the next step and read the authors' books. Each essay contains sidebars including an "Idea in Brief" sidebar which will help the busy reader further; however, in the Kindle version the sidebars simply appear in the main text, which interrupts the flow and can lead to confusion.

Not all strategic advice is good advice. In my view the advice given in the essay "Transforming Corner-Office Strategy into Frontline Action" leaves something to be desired. The idea of distilling a company's entire strategy into "one pithy, memorable and descriptive phrase" may appeal to some, but I really struggle to see its value. Examples include AOL ("Consumer Connectivity first - anytime, anywhere"), GE ("Be number one or number two in every industry in which we compete, or get out"), Dell ("Be direct"), and eBay ("Focus on trading communities"). Do any of these actually communicate useful strategies, or are they meaningless mantras?

On the other hand, I found the other essays on essentially the same topic (turning strategy into action) quite useful. "The Secrets to Successful Strategy Execution" by Neilson, Martin and Powers and "Turning Great Strategy into Great Performance" by Mankins and Steele gave some very practical steps which a leadership team can take to make a strategy actually happen. All up, I recommend this book as a valuable introduction to strategy.

How to create "a unique and valuable position" by deciding what to do...and not do

This volume is one of several in a new series of anthologies of articles that initially appeared in the Harvard Business Review, in this instance from 1960 until 2006. Remarkably, none seems dated; on the contrary, if anything, all seem more relevant now than ever before as their authors discuss what are (literally) essential dimensions of formulating and then executing an effective strategy.

My own opinion is that strategies are "hammers" that drive tactics ("nails) and the key is to get a strategy in proper alignment with the ultimate objectives as well as with an organization's various activities. That said, what we have in this volume is a variety of thoughtful perspectives on strategy provide by those who are among the world's most highly-regarded authorities on the subject.

More specifically, the reader learns how to understand what strategy is and isn't as well as what it does and (doesn't) do, and, how to manage/leverage the five competitive forces that shape strategy (Michael E. Porter); also, how to build a company's vision (James C. Collins and Jerry I. Porras), how to reinvent a business model (Mark W. Johnson, Clayton M. Christensen, and Henning Kagermann), how to formulate and then execute a "blue ocean strategy" (W. Chan Kim and Ren�e Mauborgne), how to take full advantage of the "secrets" of effective strategy execution (Gary L. Neilson, Karla L. Martin, and Elizabeth Powers), how to use the Balanced Scorecard as a strategic management system (Robert S. Kaplan and David P. Norton), how to transform corner-office strategy into frontline action (Orit Gadiesh and James L. Gilbert), how to turn great strategy into great performance (Michael C. Mankins and Richard Steele), and gain a much better understanding of how clear decision roles enhance organizational performance (Paul Rogers and Marcia Blenko).

Each article includes two invaluable reader-friendly devices, "Idea in Brief" and "Idea in Practice" sections, that facilitate, indeed expedite review of key points. Some articles also include what I characterize as "business nuggets" in which their authors focus on even more specific subjects such as "Finding New Positions: The Entrepreneurial Edge" (Porter, Page 10), "Big Hairy, Audacious Goals Aid Long-Term Vision" (Collins and Porras, 96), "A snapshot of blue ocean creation" (Kim and Mauborgne, 130-132), "Translation vision and strategy: four perspectives" and "Managing strategy: four processes" (Kaplan and Norton, 172 & 173), and "A Decision-Making Primer" (Rogers and Blenko, 236-237).

These ten articles do not - because they obviously cannot - explain everything that one knows to know and understand about the formulation and execution of an effective strategy. However, I do not know of another single source at this price (currently $14.23 from Amazon) that provides more and better information, insights, and advice that will help leaders to achieve success in the business dimensions explained so well by the authors of the articles in this volume.

Stage 2 Capital investment is the means to catch up with competition. Stage 2 avoids introduction of major discontinuous changes in product or process. Stage 2 follows industry practices. Great introductory course on the AVR Microcontrolers

This is an excellent introductory book on the AVR Microcontroler. It teaches the basics of assembly language programing for the AVR. I have found that assembly language programing is far superior to C language programing for the basic Input/Output programs and bit manipulation that I need to do for my experimental applications. The reader actually writes most of the programs in this book via a series of exercizes and challanges. It introduces the AVR instruction set via projects and text which fully explain each instruction and how it works. The AVR instruction set is easily applied to the entire family of AVR microcontrolers, unlike some other MCUs which each have their own set of instructions. The book goes into detail on the basic strategies that are needed for complete functional programs. I had struggled with the C language but became a true believer in the assmembly language instruction set after reading only the first few sections of this book. The text also provides circuit diagrams and cleared up all of my questions about circuit issues. I am very happy with this purchase and will keep this book as a reference going forward.

I was pleased to find so much value in a book this ...

I was pleased to find so much value in a book this small. This is a book for programming in Assembly. But considering the entry level processors that the author used that was a good idea. It won't be hard migrating ti C language after reading this book. I lost my original copy and ended up buying a new one. I felt it was worth it. Don't worry about the small number of typos. With a data sheet you can easily figure them out.

Not bad, not great

This is a pretty basic book, maybe only 150 pgs (minus appendix and section with binary math refresher). There's no index (sigh). It's based on AT90S1200 and Tiny12, but more recent device types should be similar at the core level. It's a learn-as-you-go introduction, which beginners will probably appreciate. So you won't see chapters oriented by "flow control", "interrupts", "arrays", etc., but by example project. But it's got lots of example code and probably worth keeping around even for the intermediate/advanced user. Avrfreaks.com is often useful and it's free.

Short erotic story

This is an erotic short story that features a character introduced in the Victoria Wilde Prequel. This story is quick, short and to the point-you have some build up between the characters to lay out the kind of who's and why's then you are treated to the steamy interlude that ensues and pretty much wraps up this story. I'd be more than happy if this author keeps'em coming and I'll keep on reading them ;)

It was a good story but...

This book was okay. I didn't necessarily fall in love with the story line which kind of kept me detached from the whole book. As far as Cougar books are concerned I feel that "The Cougar Hunter" by DeForrest Leronte is phenomenal. This book made me interested in finding other books like it. All in all, its a good book but not great.

I enjoyed this short book VERY much. I read all of Ian Dalton/Luke Young's books. I just think he's so talented. I enjoyed this book very much although it was not my favorite of Luke's books.
I recommend it to people who enjoy erotica shorts! It was a cut above!
