Two veterans of decades of adventuring in Grand Canyon chronicle the first complete and comprehensive history of Canyon misadventures. These episodes span the entire era of visitation from the time of the first river exploration by John Wesley Powell and his crew of 1869 to that of tourists falling off its rims in Y2K.

These accounts of the 550 people who have met untimely deaths in the Canyon set a new high water mark for offering the most astounding array of adventures, misadventures, and life saving lessons published between any two covers. Over the Edge promises to be the most intense yet informative book on Grand Canyon ever written.

From Library Journal
Flagstaff, AZ-based authors Ghiglieri, a biologist who leads river trips in the Grand Canyon and abroad, and Myers (Fateful Journey: Injury and Death on Colorado River Trips in Grand Canyon), a medical doctor who has treated hundreds of Canyon injuries, have compiled a fascinating chronicle of deaths and dangers in Grand Canyon National Park. The book is arranged by category falls, dehydration, floods, the Colorado River, air crashes, freak accidents, suicides, and murder and at the end of each chapter is a chronological list with names, descriptions, and causes of the accidents. The authors show that most of the deaths, whether of tourists, prospectors, or experienced adventurers, occurred when people failed to pay attention to warning signs or did not use common sense; others are attributed to high testosterone levels. The episodes are engrossing, but one becomes sated with the details after a while. For public and large academic libraries. George M. Jenks, Bucknell Univ., Lewisburg PA

About the Author
Michael P Ghiglieri has worked as a wilderness river guide since 1974. He earned is Ph.D in Biological Ecology from the University of California at Davis for his research project on wild chimpanzees in Uganda. He has run more than 600 commercial whitewater trips in the U.S., Ethiopia, Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Rwanda, Sumatra, Java, Papau New Guinea, Peru, Turkey, Australia, and Canada. His expeditions include well over 100 two-week trips in Grand Canyon as a rowing or paddling guide/trip leader or NPS River Ranger. Ghiglieri has spent 1,500 days inside the Canyon and has rendered assistance as an EMT during many accidents. His previous book on Grand Canyon, Canyon, was hailed by the Library Journal as "the single best introduction to a myriad of aspects of this 'most impressive place' this reviewer has seen. Recommended for all..."

Thomas M. Myers earned his M.D. from the University of Arizona and worked as a physician at Grand Canyon for nearly a decade, living at the South Rim with his family. Myers began exploring Grand Canyon at age ten and never stopped. He has hiked the Canyon backcountry extensively and rowed the Colorado River several times. Myers has seens, responded to, treated, and tried to understand the ontogeny of thousands of injuries and of all too many traumatic fatalities occurring in the Canyon. Myers, with co-authors Chris Becker and Larry Stevens, made the first-ever detailed statistical analysis of river accidents in their book Fateful Journey: Injury and Death on Colorado River Trips in Grand Canyon, dispelling many previously held myths about the risks of running the Colorado.

Our hiking companion fell into the river
By Patty K. Mooney
We were there when Jody Mack fell into the river in 1983. It was a journey of mixed emotions, as we had such a blast in the canyon, and yet of the 31 of us who walked down into the canyon, only 30 of us climbed back out. Jody had made the dire mistake of trying to touch the river water from a slippery slab. We never knew whether Jody's body had been recovered or lost forever. This book answered that question. Mother Nature is not to be trifled with, and this book is a sobering reminder of that.

Don't judge this book by its cover...
By Dad5
Don't judge this book by its cover. While the cover is a bit cartoonish, the book is detailed, analytical and compelling. Sure, at 500+ pages, there may be some (brief) sections you skim a bit, but overall the book provides detailed accounts of Grand Canyon fatalities, and more importantly, provides some key lessons to survival in and around the Grand Canyon. Both authors are extremely well experienced in the outdoors, with Myers also bringing the perspective of an emergency physician. You may not need this book if you're just planning a day trip to the GC and have the good sense to stay well back of the rim. But, if you are planning to hike into the GC (even on well-marked trails) this is a definite must-read prior to your trip. I read this book out of curiosity after a GC trip that included both the South Rim and North Rim, and also included a hike part way down the Bright Angel Trail, which is generally perceived as "safe". I was amazed by the number of incidents that tool place in or around areas I had visited. So, if you plan to hike in the GC (or travel on mules or rafts as well) then read this book first. As a bonus, the checklists at the end of the book are worth the book price alone.

Exciting book!
By HerGrooviness
I sometimes read to fall asleep but the first chapter got my adrenaline pumping and couldn't put the book down. It's a good, interesting, exciting and informational book to read whether you go to the Grand Canyon or not. It could make the readers think twice and realize when, or if, they are possibly taking fatal risks by their actions, in any nature setting. In my own experience, before I read this book, I witnessed first hand, at the Grand Canyon, those people who think rules apply to everyone else, but not them, by stepping beyond signs that clearly warn against it, just for a daring looking picture. That was before social media, so I can imagine there's a lot more of it going on these days. But that is just one type of scenario that is risky. The book tells of many people's individual stories and I'm happy that the author included some instances where the individuals survived because it adds a bit of suspense because the reader (me) is pulling for the individual to survive.

The Humanity and Divinity of Christ: A Study of Pattern in Christology, by John Knox

Christ's manhood is a problem central to Christology. Professor Knox considers the several attitudes towards Christ's humanity adopted by the Early Church. In so doing, he outlines and clarifies contemporary understanding of the significance of Christ himself. Professor Knox proposes and defends a method of understanding the structure of New Testament Christology as a whole, whereby a pattern of development is discerned, and discusses ways in which modern Christians should consider the humanity of Christ. By this reasoning, the meaning and relevance of the pattern of Christology outlined in the first part is continued up to the present day. This clear account of a complex subject is designed for both the scholar and thoughtful layman.

An Insightful, Delightful Book
By Sterrett Collins
I found this jewel of a book a few years ago, and it sat on my shelf unread for more than a year. I had so many other books to read, I didn't have time. When I finally did read it, I wished I had not waited. It is an easy read, and it was filled with insight and with clear exposition on issues that had been bothering me. I kept phoning my father, with whom I have deep theological dialogues, and reading passages to him for us to discuss. I recomend it to anyone who seeks more answers in Christology, whether they are in the classroom, in the pew, or in the pulpit. Even more, I would recomend it to anyone who thinks they have the answers.

AN EPISCOPAL PRIEST/THEOLOGIAN CONSIDERS CHRISTOLOGY
By Steven H Propp
John Knox (1901-1990) was a Methodist Minister who taught at the University of Chicago Divinity School from 1939 to 1943, was a Professor at Union Theological Seminary from 1943 to 1966, and then was professor at the Episcopal Theological Seminary until 1971. He became an Episcopal priest in 1962.

He wrote in the Introduction to this 1967 book, "My purpose in this essay is limited and comparatively simple: I wish to lift up for consideration the several ways in which the early Church dealt with what has always been the central problem of christology, namely, the humanity of Christ, the divine Lord, and in this way help, if I may, to clarify our own thoughts about him."

He argues, "The question, however, is ... whether evidence for the primitive existence of such a(n "adoptionist") christology is to be found in (Luke's) work. I do not see how we can escape the conclusion that it is. To cite the clearest example, Acts 2:36... how can this passage be interpreted to mean anything else than that the man Jesus... was at the resurrection exalted to his present messianic status?" (Pg. 7-8)

Later he observes, "There are pasasges in Paul which... would suggest that he shared in the primitive adoptionism... But if such passages... seem to reflect the persistence of the early adoptionism, other passages put beyond doubt Paul's belief in Jesus' pre-existence." (Pg. 19-20) He adds, "Did Paul think of Jesus as being in his pre-existence this ideal heavenly Man?... one cannot rule out the possibility that Paul, at least sometimes, thought of Christ's pre-existence in terms borrowed from this kind of theological speculation." (Pg. 21)

He concludes, "For if it is impossible to conceive that God could become a man, it is also impossible to conceive of a man's becoming God. But actually no such conception needs to be involved in our confession of the resurrection. He was 'raised to the right hand of God.' He was not divested of his humanity, but his humanity itself became a divine, and divinely redeeming, thing." (Pg. 111)

This is an interesting study of the biblical and creedal basis of the doctrine of Jesus, and will be useful to both biblical students and students of theology.

Misses the mark
By Zach82
In this book, Knox makes his case for the importance of asserting the absolute and unadultered humanity of Jesus Christ. He opens with exploring why the picture of Christ as mere human could not satisfy the Early Church and cannot satisfy it today, then traces the development of the doctrine of the Divinity of Christ up to the point that the Church found itself rejecting docetism, the heresy that denies the humanity of Christ in favor of God that made himself to only seem human. At this point, Knox goes about finding docetism everywhere in orthodox Christian teachings, for in every usual explanation of the Incarnation one cannot say that Jesus was fully human. The redemption, he insists, only makes sense if Jesus was "a man like the rest of us." Giving him any deity at all separates him from humanity and falls into docetism. Since he cannot reject the preexistence of Christ, and cannot think of him as anything but human, and cannot see the two as anything but contradictory, Knox flees docetism straight into the arms of the heresy of Arianism, the doctrine that Jesus was created by God, then invested with divinity. His attempt to avoid Arius falls flat, when he tries to make some connection between the human Jesus and God's eternal work in the world. The Church's worship of Jesus is justified and Jesus can be called divine because God's work in the world becomes fully evident in Jesus' life. He seems to hardly believe his own doctrine of the Incarnation when he writes that this poor divinity of his was actually incarnate in "Jesus in the community of the Church" rather than really in Jesus Himself. While refusing to actually say it, he goes so far as to imply that Jesus must have sinned "Like the rest of us," because otherwise he would have been other than human. Take from his book the interesting account of the development of the doctrine of the Incarnation and its impassioned plea to fully accept the humanity of Christ. Leave, however, the Arianism.

From Publishers Weekly
With tongue firmly in cheek and more than a little irony, Pretor-Pinney, founder of the Cloud Appreciation Society, clears up any confusion readers may have about what separates a stratus from a cirrus from a cumulonimbus. He starts at the bottom-that is, at sea level-and discusses the types of clouds that form at each level in the atmosphere. The result is an amusing and remarkably informative jaunt through the heavenly vapors that draws on classical poetry, physics, geekery and pop culture. Despite this improbable mélange, Pretor-Pinney succeeds in fleshing out subtleties and making difficult concepts like convection, advection, condensation and atmospheric optics comprehensible to almost any reader. The author has included dozens of illustrations, cloud photos (including one that looks like two cats dancing and another that resembles Thor hurling a lightning bolt) and diagrams showing the anatomy and lifecycles of clouds. Rounding out the volume are a chapter on the human effects on clouds and a narrative about the author's pursuit of the "Morning Glory," which he calls "the most spectacular cloud in the world." By mixing self-deprecating humor and hard science, Pretor-Pinney makes learning about clouds fun.

The book is written with gentle British humor, but there is real substance in the text. It would have been nice to have color photos, but the black and white are sufficient to identifying the cloud type you will encounter (what can you expect for the low price). For myself, the Cloudspotter's Guide has been a way to enjoy the clouded sky in a thoughtful way that has enhanced my appreciation for the world around me. My car's moon roof is now a cloud roof, and open all the time. (And for those color photographs, buy the Cloud Collector's Handbook by the same author.)

At last ... a really useful research project
By Theodore A. Rushton
Rare is the day that at least a little cloud does not cloud our lives, though except to say "that's a big cloud!" or "do you think it'll rain?" few people know much about clouds.

This gem of a book fills a skyful absence of useful facts; rainbows and clouds may be the last elements of nature that humans failed to consign to a zoo, a can or a landfill. Even so, clouds may be an endangered species; years ago in the Sonoran Desert, clouds used to rain upon the just and the unjust on summer afternoons ... now those clouds seem to have gone, to be replaced by haboobs followed by drenching night deluges.

Cumulus, Cirrus, the dramatic Morning Glory and wispy Carmen Miranda are among the clouds in this book. Glider pilots travel thousands of miles to surf the Morning Glory when it forms in the springtime of September and October over Burketown in Australia's northern Queensland. Personally, when flying a glider, I always looked for "Q's" which gave an upward lift like a fast elevator. (Q = Cumulus)

Little did I realize the innocent desert mid-afternoon Q's were baby brothers of Cumulonimbus, the King of Clouds who can soar a dozen miles. These gods of the sky, which all wise pilots politely skirt instead of slicing through, churn energy measured by multiples of atomic bomb explosions.

Care for a challenge? Try to get a "great" picture of a Q.

Perhaps instead, in the superb words of Pretor-Pinney, it is better to consider "... clouds are nature's poetry ... expressions of the atmosphere's moods that can be read like those of a person's countenance ... Clouds are for dreamers, and their contemplation benefits the soul."

In Orillia, Canada, where I grew up, clouds may last a week at a time. In the desert, where I now live, clouds change as quickly as a politician's views on everything but clouds. Perhaps if politicians paid more attention to clouds and less to clods the world would be much better.

Pretor-Pinney, co-founder of 'The Idler' magazine in England, provides a wonderful field of study that will greatly pleasure any person without inflicting harm on any living creature or artifact of nature. He also founded 'The Cloud Appreciation Society' of which my wife is a member (the last scientific organization I belonged to was 'The Flat Earth Society' -- now sadly defunct, though the Earth is much the same).

This is a book, an idea and a cause to restore some sanity to this world that has gone mad, bad, sad and rad -- too rad.

Hands-down the greatest treatise on the natural history of clouds
By MAG
Hands-down the greatest treatise on the natural history of clouds - how they get made, how to classify them. Cloud classification may seem silly at first blush, but the fact is that you actually do SEE more when you know what you're looking at. Author's wit is fantastic, making this a wonderful read. Lovely gift for observant friends (and even some not-so-observant ones).

I And Thou, by Martin Buber

Martin Buber's I and Thou has long been acclaimed as a classic. Many prominent writers have acknowledged its influence on their work; students of intellectual history consider it a landmark; and the generation born since World War II considers Buber as one of its prophets.
The need for a new English translation has been felt for many years. The old version was marred by many inaccuracies and misunderstandings, and its recurrent use of the archaic "thou" was seriously misleading. Now Professor Walter Kaufmann, a distinguished writer and philosopher in his own right who was close to Buber, has retranslated the work at the request of Buber's family. He has added a wealth of informative footnotes to clarify obscurities and bring the reader closer to the original, and he has written a long "Prologue" that opens up new perspectives on the book and on Buber's thought. This volume should provide a new basis for all future discussions of Buber.

Amazon.com Review
I and Thou, Martin Buber's classic philosophical work, is among the 20th century's foundational documents of religious ethics. "The close association of the relation to God with the relation to one's fellow-men ... is my most essential concern," Buber explains in the Afterword. Before discussing that relationship, in the book's final chapter, Buber explains at length the range and ramifications of the ways people treat one another, and the ways they bear themselves in the natural world. "One should beware altogether of understanding the conversation with God ... as something that occurs merely apart from or above the everyday," Buber explains. "God's address to man penetrates the events in all our lives and all the events in the world around us, everything biographical and everything historical, and turns it into instruction, into demands for you and me." Throughout I and Thou, Buber argues for an ethic that does not use other people (or books, or trees, or God), and does not consider them objects of one's own personal experience. Instead, Buber writes, we must learn to consider everything around us as "You" speaking to "me," and requiring a response. Buber's dense arguments can be rough going at times, but Walter Kaufmann's definitive 1970 translation contains hundreds of helpful footnotes providing Buber's own explanations of the book's most difficult passages. --Michael Joseph Gross

Born in Germany in 1921, he graduated from Williams College in 1941, and returned to Europe with U.S. Military Intelligence during World War II. In 1947 he received his Ph.D. from Harvard and joined the Princeton faculty. He has held visiting professorships at many American universities, and Fulbright professorships at Heidelberg and at The Hebrew University in Jerusalem.

His books include Nietzsche, Critique of Religion and Philosophy, From Shakespeare to Existentialism, The Faith of a Heretic, Cain and Other Poems, Hegel, and Tragedy and Philosophy. Several of these books have been translated into various foreign languages.

Kaufmann's own translations of ten of Nietzsche's works, of Leo Baeck's Judaism and Christianity, and of Twenty German Poets have won wide recognition. Of his verse translation of Goethe's Faust, Stephen Spender said in The New York Times Book Review: "The best translation of Faust that I have read." And the Virginia Quarterly Review said: "There is little question that this is the translation of Goethe's Faust, both in poetic beauty and in comprehension of the original."

Illuminary Jewish Philosopher.
By S. Lee
As an existential, Jewish philosopher, Buber takes the seriousness of the ‘eternal Thou.’ Only through the ‘Thou’ can a person be an ‘I.’ In other words, the ‘supreme meeting’ in the pure relation of I-Thou, which demands the whole person, is a revelation that completely changes the person. However, in the aftermath, the contemptuous habit of the person is to warp the ‘Thou’ into an ‘It’–understandable, manageable, and conquerable. Buber likens this deplorable act as replacing God for an idol. So, what can be done? Buber exhorts two exercises: (1) treat the world and others as ‘Thou’ than ‘It” and (2) prayer. With a sacramental view, Buber affirms that the world and everything in it are ‘Thou’ pointing to the ‘eternal Thou.’ If we cannot treat worldly ‘Thou’ rightly, how can we possibly respect the ‘eternal Thou’? Next, prayer is accepting the meeting with a ‘Thou,’ which climactically breaks the I-It cycle.

I and Thou review
By Carl Cleveland
I love Martin Buber's language in describing relationships as either "I-Thou" or "I-It". I find this very helpful when working with groups to help them understand how subtle differences can quickly change the relationship and damage communications. While the concept is simple, the nuances and subtle issues in practice are certainly not and like all good human relations, requires a great deal of study, practice and more practice. With that in mind, this translation of the poetic original I-Thou by Buber needed more for me to understand and embrace it more fully. To that end, I found Kenneth Paul Kramer's "Martin Buber's I and Thou; Practicing Living Dialogue" to be a very good companion resource.

I and Thou sets the standard
By Doane
"I and Thou" by Martin Buber is one of the most important books ever written.
First published in 1923, in my opinion, it is certainly the most important book of the 20th century. Over the course of decades, it affected religious and philosophical thinking throughout the Western world, and even in some Asian places.
Buber shows how the relationships between people, between people and the world and between people and God are pivotal in how we see the world.
"To man the world is twofold, in accordance with his twofold attitude ...in accord with the twofold nature of the primary words he speaks ...
"The one primary word is the combination I-Thou.
"The other primary word is the combination I-It ...," says Buber at the beginning of this work.
This is much more complex than can be explained here, which is why you need to read this book of only 137 pages, including the postscript.
In short, when we approach someone with the attitude of I-It, we see him or her as an object. This is the attitude we often take at work, and the attitude which allows us to exploit the world.
When we approach someone with the attitude of I-Thou, we see him or her as the unique and existentially real person he or she really is at heart. We see that person's soul and can never treat him or her as an object in any way.
This attitude is also the way we address the world when it seems magical, such as in moments when nature calls to us and we see it as part of ourselves and ourselves as a part of it.
I-Thou is how we address God when our hearts and souls open to let the Infinite in, when the spirit of God touches us.
In other words, I-Thou is when we are in true relation with anything, when the boundaries we set up between ourselves and the world come down.
Unfortunately, since we live in a material world, there are times when we must address the world as I-It, which is where troubles begin.
Buber was an Austrian-born Jewish philosopher who was a part of the Zionist movement as the editor of its central newspaper, but later became an advocate of a joint Palestinian-Jewish homeland to share what is Israel today.
Since Buber wrote "I and Thou" in idiosyncratic German, with a highly poetic and metaphorical structure, there are differences in how some think it should be translated. Personally, I prefer the translation Buber worked on with Ronald Gregor Smith, because it retains its poetic and reverent tone, but the most available translation is a later translation by Walter Kaufmann. Readers may have to find used copies to find the Smith translation, as I did, get the Kindle edition or try the interlibrary loan system.
Even if you've read this gem, it bears reading again. Different chapters of our lives can give it added meaning, which is why I read it every few years.
Don't miss this one.

Macho Man: The Disco Era and Gay America's Coming Out, by Randy Jones, Mark Bego

The Vietnam War was over and America seemed in the midst of a nationwide party. The self-proclaimed Me generation was flocking to discotheques, recreational drug use was high, and sexual taboos were being shattered nationwide. Then The Village People appeared on the music scene. Never before had gay sexuality been as up-front and in the face of America. The Village People struck a cultural nerve and fueled a craze that had them playing to sold-out crowds at Madison Square Garden. Even today, few adults could not at least hum the tunes to Y.M.C.A. and Macho Man. Because of the unique role they played in the United States of the late 1970s, The Village People are able to provide a powerful lens through which to view the emergence and development of gay culture in America. In Macho Man, readers can travel back with one of the first gay icons in popular music, and a top pop culture biographer, as they describe this complicated process of change.

In these pages, Randy Jones, the original cowboy in the band, takes us inside the time period, the discos, and the new musical style that was in many ways unprecedented in giving a voice to a previously closeted gay culture. Assisted by Mark Bego, one of the most popular and prolific pop culture authors working today, Jones shows how the fast-lane rise, fall, and rebirth of this novel band paralleled activities across the last 40 years within the gay culture and gay rights movement. The work concludes with a gayography ― a listing of openly gay musicians and performers in the United States before and since The Village People - along with a discography and filmography. This work will interest pop culture and music enthusiasts, in addition to scholars in gay studies.

So cute!
By Jo Anna Sturm
My 6 year old loves the pictures and it's easy for her to read. I like it because it opens up conversation about differences in people. Kids are curious, they stare and they don't easily understand that just because someone/something looks different doesn't mean they aren't awesome just like them! Loved it!

True Story- Lessons for a Child or Adult to learn about Real Life
By Glenn
My wife and I purchased the Daisy book from Author Marney at a show at our local mall to do research on children's books.
We feel this book is very well written and has several messages through out that would help any child understand that animals, like people do get sick or injured and with some help can survive and be part of a world that still loves them even if they may look different.
If a child can relate to animals that will carry over to mankind and surely make this world a better place. I would think this book would be a excellent read to relate to our injured veterans. Buy the book! Well written, great pictures of real life and Authors put their heart in it.
