The Handbook of ReparationsFrom Oxford University Press

This Handbook provides a broad range of essential information about past experiences with massive reparations programs as well as normative guidance for future practice. It examines in detail reparations programs in different parts of the world; includes thematic papers on topics that frequently come about in the design and implementation of reparations programs; and, finally, reproduces key documents on reparations, including national legislation.

In addition to providing a wealth of factual information about a wide range of reparations programs (some of them previously unexamined), the thematic papers break new ground, tackling issues that have not been sufficiently addressed (if at all) in the literature, including the very notion of justice in reparations for the massive cases, the relationship between material compensation and other symbolic measures of reparations, and the complicated set of questions around how to provide reparations to victims of sexual violence.

Finally, the book makes available fundamental documents on reparations, including national legislation. These documents--which are either difficult to find or have never been translated into English before--are both directly relevant to the case studies and the thematic papers, and illuminating to those thinking prospectively about the design and implementation of reparations programs.

Incredibly unsatisfied
By yana
I don't understand how this book has gotten such good reviews to be honest. I bought this book hoping to get the basics of anatomy so that I could deepen my scientific understanding of asana. I have found this book useless in that regard. The authors take absolutely no effort in laying out the major skeletal and muscle groups, they don't talk about the joints, they don't give any basic anatomical terms. However, they do spend a whole section talking about how they went about getting the images in the book. WEIRD. They just jump into using, what was for me, advanced anatomical terminology - which I was given no understanding of by them. Seems careless. I have tried to use the book and it just doesn't work for someone who has never studied anatomy. I'm really disappointed.

I went on to purchase Ray Long's book on yoga anatomy and am so excited about it. I have learned so much. He takes time to lay out all of the basic terms and explains the way the bones, muscles, and joints function physiologically and in relationship to asana. I recommend that book very highly if you are a beginner and want to get a good, simple foundation in anatomy.

Graphics are way too small on the Kindle version--buy the paper book.
By Roseanne M.
This is a 5 star book, but the Kindle version is lacking. Since this is a book all about the illustrations, I would not recommend the Kindle version at all!
I've adjusted my settings using every method I can find. The text changes, but the graphics always look like a postage stamp. Even with reading glasses it is very difficult to see the callouts and text inside the images.

I wish I could trade this in and order the paperback version:(

Updated manual details muscular and skeletal functions involved in yoga asanas
By Reviewer Dr. Beth
NOTE: I received a free copy of this book to review for the web site Metapsychology Online Reviews; you can read a more detailed version of my review on that site.

YOGA ANATOMY is one of a series of anatomical guides from the Human Kinetics; Each manual in this series provides detailed, full-color illustrations of the muscles involved in particular movements. What is particularly unique about the wonderful anatomical illustrations is that they are based on photographs of actual yoga poses, some of which were shot from above or below as the yoga models perched on a suspended piece of acrylic (see Page 68 of the text for details).

This 2011 version is actually a second edition; the original Yoga Anatomy was released in 2007. In his Preface, first author Leslie Kaminoff notes that this latest version builds on the success of the first edition by adding in material that was deleted from the original due to space constraints. This includes two brand-new chapters by co-author Amy Matthews; Kaminoff points out that the asana sections have been completely revised by Matthews as well. These updates, along with new indexes and other improvements, add significantly to the overall volume of this edition.

The first part of this book forms a relatively brief but intensive lesson in anatomy, focusing on the movements and functions most relevant to yoga practice. Kaminoff opens with a chapter on "Dynamics of Breathing," which details the way the breath moves through the body, particularly the actions of the diaphragm. Next is "Yoga and the Spine," an essential breakdown of the spine and how it moves through various ranges of flexion and extension. The two new chapters by Matthews, "Skeletal System" and "Muscular System," follow. These short offerings describe the relevant anatomical structures and review the main principles of functioning for each system.

Kaminoff and Matthews jointly introduce the postures with "Inside the Asanas." Here they describe how the asana analysis was conducted and what information is included for each pose (e.g., skeletal joint actions, muscular joint actions, breathing notes, etc.). The asanas themselves are classified in the chapters which follow according to "Standing Poses," "Sitting Poses," "Kneeling Poses," "Supine Poses," "Prone Poses," and "Arm Support Poses." Rather than being presented completely in a narrative format, the postural breakdowns now incorporate easy-to-read graphics which quickly inform the reader which areas of the body are in contraction versus extension. The poses appear to be identical to those in the first edition, although supplementary variations are depicted here.

In addition to presenting an Asana Index both in Sanskrit and English, the new appendices include Joint and Muscle Indexes as well. With this release of Yoga Anatomy-2nd Edition, authors Kaminoff and Matthews have provided intelligent, useful enhancements to an already-excellent manual; this book may be worth the purchase even for those who already own the original release.

Anglican Theology (Doing Theology), by Mark Chapman

This book seeks to explain the ways in which Anglicans have sought to practise theology in their various contexts. It is a clear, insightful, and reliable guide which avoids technical jargon and roots its discussions in concrete examples. The book is primarily a work of historical theology, which engages deeply with key texts and writers from across the tradition (e.g. Cranmer, Jewel, Hooker, Taylor, Butler, Simeon, Pusey, Huntington, Temple, Ramsey, and many others). As well as being suitable for seminary courses, it will be of particular interest to study groups in parishes and churches, as well as to individuals who seek to gain a deeper insight into the traditions of Anglicanism. While it adopts a broad and unpartisan approach, it will also be provocative and lively.

Helpful intro to Anglican theology
By Amazon Customer
This was a great introduction to the concepts and history of Anglican theology. Words that kept leaping out at me were "authority" and "contested". The author maps out the issues the English church dealt with regarding tradition, scripture, and determining what sort of theology and practice were deemed authoritative. The issue of scriptural authority is one that every tradition wrestles with, especially in the Reformed and Protestant traditions. The author also points out many times through the book that everything the Anglican tradition has done has been contested in one way or another as it worked to walk a middle path between Roman Catholicism and Protestantism. Everything is contested and nuanced, so don't approach a book like this thinking you'll walk away with any black-and-white answers. That just isn't how Anglicans do things.

Never underestimate the Poms
By Adam Fforde
Superb exposition deep in the tolerant current of Anglicanism. Deeply suggestive - the idea that Anglicanism's most powerful creative act was to institutionalise tolerance of difference. Prompts thought about the relation between secular and spiritual when the Divine is thought manifest in a theologically sceptical religious and political community.

I just completed 2 years of study for the Diaconate. I wanted to persue further study of Anglican theology and history. This book by Chapman is doing a great job of that for me. Buy it.

Excellent book- but a little heavy to lug around!
By S Prabhu
Great book. Covers all the topics in detail. Only wish I could make it a little lighter! It is hard to lug this around to the hospital when I need to read it. I work in a pediatric radiology department and the library has not yet invested in this edition. The coverage of HRCT and topics like Wegener's granulomatosis is exceptional. Figures are clear and depict the findings very well. The authors, who are world-renowned experts in their field, must be commended for yet another fine tome.
In fact, one of the authors examined me in a mock viva at a London course in 2002 and although I did well with his questions, I still remember being in awe. It was great to learn from him again while reading this book!!

One of the bests in Radiology
By chamila walgampaya
I bought this item for my wife. She is a radiologist and has been using a paper back version of the same book. Most of the pictures in the paper back version are not clear and confusing. This was an excellent replacement. She loved it.

Amazon.com Review
The Fourth Turning continues the project of mapping out the place of generations in history, a project begun in the authors' earlier books Generations and 13th Gen. If millennial fever takes hold, The Fourth Turning may be only the first of an impending wave of pseudo-scholarly tracts prognosticating future (but imminent!) doom as we collectively close the books on this millennium. Those expecting a serious or dry tome might be put off by the authors' taste for bulleted text and catchy phrasings, but can you blame these guys for wanting to make impending peril as exciting as possible? After all, they think we are headed toward "events on par with the Revolution, the Civil War, or World War II" in the next 20 years. Mixing solid understanding of present generational divisions, with some fairly broad generalizations, Strauss and Howe promise to move from history to prophecy. Fans of Future Shock, Megatrends, or Powershift will be familiar with the authors' style of writing and not at all put off by the book's reach or style. Their take on history provides an intriguing (if not always reliable) lens through which to view the past, present, and maybe even the future.

From Library Journal
After researching historical patterns, the authors (Generations: The History of America's Future, Morrow, 1991) conclude that America is on the verge of crisis. They substantiate their hypothesis by identifying and tracing a repetitive, four-stage historical cycle that, throughout recorded time, started on a high note and ended in hardship. Narrator Michael Tilford's polished, convincing voice and steady pacing lend an air of legitimacy to the authors' assertions. A brief question-and-answer session between the narrator and the authors at program's end provides an interactive quality that enhances the sometimes methodical drone of the historical analysis. Like other works of prophecy, The Fourth Turning should circulate well in public libraries.?Mark P. Tierney, The World Bank, Washington, D.C.

From Booklist
What is so attractive about deterministic, cyclical theories offered to explain troublingly complex realities? Strauss and Howe, who staked out "generational change" as their mantra in Generations: The History of America's Future, 1584^-2069 (1991) and then 13th-GEN: Abort, Retry, Ignore, Fail? (1993), return to argue that the U.S. can anticipate a major crisis--a fourth turning--in the first decade of the twenty-first century. Regrettably, some 40 percent of the book's 350 pages retrace seasons of time and life, the cycles of history, and the "Anglo-American Saeculum" : largely a rehash of ideas from their earlier books. They discuss the U.S.' most recent three turnings: the "High" of the decades after World War II; the 1964^-84 "Consciousness Revolution" ; and 1984-2005's "Culture Wars." To assess "fourth turnings," they describe examples (England's War of the Roses, Armada Crisis, and Glorious Revolution, and the American Revolution, Civil War, and Depression and World War II) and then predict the kinds of catalysts and crises that might push the U.S. into its next "fourth turning." Strauss and Howe offer suggestions on how we can prepare for these challenges, but few will learn much from their standard words of wisdom. Probably a harmless enough brand of New Age futurism from the GOP Beltway think tanks, but aggressive marketing suggests high visibility. Mary Carroll

Sweeping, compelling, and quite readable
By Marc
I picked up a copy of "The Fourth Turning" because to refresh myself on the generational differences of donors. I was hoping to help a colleague wrestle with how to apply fundraising techniques with attention to these cohorts. Having read the authors' 13th Gen a few years ago, I knew this would be an erudite review. I got what I was looking for and much more! "The Fourth Turning" is actually a compelling look at human history, especially Western history since the middle of the fifteenth century!
Howe and Strauss have amazingly taken the most recent 20th century generations (GI, Silent, Boomer, Xer, and Millennial) and found corresponding generations for the last few hundred years. From this, they've developed a convincing rubric of generational archetypes-GIs and Millennials are the "Hero," Silents are the "Artist," Boomers are the "Prophet," and Xers are the "Nomad." Moreover, they've revisited the millennia old theory that time moves through seasons in a cyclical pattern, one that corresponds with the seasons of the year. The post-WWII era was our "High" or spring; the Consciousness Revolution was our "Awakening" or summer; the 80's and 90's was our "Unraveling" or fall; and we're currently headed for our "Crisis" or winter. They chose to label the seasons "turnings" and the time encompassing the four turnings as the "saecula," a label used by the ancients that roughly corresponds to a century.
With an amazing attention to detail, a scholarly eye to history, and a wonderfully readable writing style, Howe and Strauss show the interplay of the generational archetypes and the turnings. For example, they point to the similarities of the spiritual emphasis of the 1960s and 1970s with the Transcendentalists of the 1800s, the Great Awakening of the 1700s, and the Puritan Awakening of the 1600s, and the Protestant Reformation of the 1500s!
"The Fourth Turning" will definitely affect the way you view history as well as the events of today. Though written in 1997, they illustrate "highly unlikely" scenarios that might precipitate the coming Crisis such as: "A global terrorist group blows up an aircraft and announces it possesses portable nuclear weapons. The United States and its allies launch a preemptive strike. The terrorists threaten to retaliate against an American city..."!
While I don't know if we're currently into the Crisis or not, I do know that "The Fourth Turning" is a must read for anyone trying to raise money in today's economic environment. Not only will the savvy fundraiser ferret out ways to frame their case for the different generations, she will also see how different turnings may affect fundraising efforts. If we are indeed heading for a fourth turning, and Howe and Strauss make that highly believable, I think we in the nonprofit world are uniquely situated to help our cultures ride out this winter and successfully enter the spring.
Although full of grim warnings, "The Fourth Turning" is a hope-filled book well worth reading.

Explanatory--but don't rely on it entirely
By A Customer
The book _The Fourth Turning_ is a history combined with prophecy written by generational sociologists William Strauss and Neil Howe. This book is inspiring and provides interesting explanations for why things are the way they turned out to be, but it still doesn't have all the answers.
The theory is basically that history goes through four types of turnings: a conservative High, in which institutions are stable after the success of a major war (the Era of Good Feelings, the Victorian Era, the '50s), a spiritual Awakening in which young people scrap convention for religious discovery (Ben Franklin's Great Awakening, the Transcendental Awakening, the turn-of-the-century Muckrake reform era, the '60s), a wild Unravelling (the colorful Gold Rush, the roaring twenties, and the current era that began about 1984), and a fourth turning -- or Crisis (the Revolutionary War, the Civil War and the Great Depression and World War II were the last three examples). A catalyst will spark the Fourth Turning that will become around 2005. These turnings change when each generation enters a new phase of life.
After you read this book, it's one of those books that completely transforms your mode of thinking. Both the present and the prophesied future are explained by means of generations -- fit into four different types ("archetypes") that shift along with the turnings. The authors identify the Lost Generation (born 1883-1900), the G.I. Generation (born 1901-1924), the Silent Generation (born 1925-1942), the Baby Boomers (born 1943-1960), the 13th Generation (born 1961-1981) and the Millennial Generation (born since 1982). They explain how these generations relate to those throughout history, and date the historical generations born all the way back to 1433. Generation X, for instance, which corresponds roughly with what they identify as the 13th Generation, is similar to the freewheeling Lost Generation of the Roaring '20s, their flouting of the Drug War brings to mind the Lost Generation during the Prohibition Era. Once you read this book, you start to think of everyone generationally, all your family and friends, people you know, celebrities, people you read about in the news, historical figures, the characters on TV shows and the ages of people in TV commercials. Your mind accepts a completely new paradigm -- and a classification of people that works, as the authors state, much more reliably than gender, ethnicity, or even region of the U.S.
Not to say that there aren't problems with this book. They broke off the 13th Generation from the Millennial Generation at 1981/1982 in their earlier work _Generations_, written in 1991, and have continued to keep this boundary and their early descriptions for the Millennials in this book. The kids born in 1982, whom they place as the first Millennials, were just entering high school when this book was written and were predicted to become known as a conventional, traditional and "Scout-like" generation, keeping a reputation as little angels. Unfortunately, none of the 1982, 1983, 1984... kids I know have this personality...their breakoff may have come a little too early I fear. Not all their predictions from this or earlier books have succeeded, but that's all right, because future or no future, the pattern works remarkably well as a mnemonic device for remembering and understanding history perfectly well, making the order in which historical figures came along much more memorable. I wish I'd had this way of studying history when I was in high school!
From this they prophesy the future -- that America is poised to enter a Crisis Era shortly around 2005, just when the generations are ripe. This era will see a national mood of extreme urgency, sweeping changes made in national policy, and a change across the generations to a much more traditional lifestyle and set of values, as Strauss and Howe predict. This book is a thought-provoking read, but if you're looking for something to explain 9-11 as so many of us were, don't look here. _The Fourth Turning_ was written about a "catalyst" for a Crisis that will change the direction of institutions in the year 2005, or if not in 2005, shortly before or after. All everyday interests in entertainment are supposed to disappear, and the change will be caused by something that wouldn't have brought about a drastic change in mood 10 years ago. It will be caused by the alignment of generations around 2005, when the Boomers are ready to enter elderhood (turn 65) and the Silent Generation is going to be into its eighties and start disappearing from the scene. It was NOT written about catastrophes like 9-11 or similar events. We get these extreme drastic events from time to time that shock people temporarily, as 9-11 did, just because of their intensity and death toll, wherever they occur. Look around 2003-2008 for the "Catalyst" Strauss and Howe have identified to pop up and permanently change the public mood. It will be something that will change the era and bring America to crisis because all the generations are poised and ready to enter their new stage of life.
In addition to its imperfections, the book has a heavily conservative bent sticking out, no doubt reflecting some of the attitudes and wishes of the authors. I cannot forgive the book's forceful attitude, pushing us all to get back to trust in public institutions and in the government. Strauss and Howe call for conservative restrictions on behavior to get the next turning pushing along. For instance, they advise the reader in getting ready for the next Crisis to give up any eccentric behavioral habits he or she may have. They tell the reader to put "duties over rights" and to conform to the standards of decency of his community. Even before the Fourth Turning, there is no doubt a single agenda they push without compromise, in what one would think would be a totally neutral book in the values regime department.
All in all, read this book if you're interested in history and generations (but take the generational boundaries and collective personalities with a grain of salt), and don't look for ALL your answers here.

Historical Prophecy
By James Hiller
Member of the 13th Generation? Millenial Generation? The Boomers? Care to track your own development through the maze of historical events to find out where you've been, and more importantly, where you are going? Where our country is going? Then pick this book up immediately. Simply put, the "Fourth Turning" is THE most important book written in the last twenty years, and a book that should be required reading.
Strauss and Howe apparently have devoted their lives to the study of history and the development of generations in societies. The book is loaded, and I mean, loaded with historical references, some of which I wasn't familiar with until now. By looking at these events, and more importantly, looking at the people that went along with those events, Strauss and Howe noticed some recurring patterns in generations over the centuries. Apply this pattern to our country, and to our future, they have correctly predicted that we are headed for a "Fourth Turning", a time of great criss and peril.
Normally, I shun books that people claim to have "visions of the future" involved with them. They are frequently erroneous and based on the whims of the author. However, "The Fourth Turning" is different. By basing their theories of the future on past events, they offer support and credence to their thoughts. The effect is both enlightening and chilling, but it is one that we simply cannot ignore.
I found every single page of their book fascinating as a study or recent history and future history. Also, I personally found self-enlightenment in reading about the generation in which I belong, the long lost "Gen X" crowd, or the title they label it, "13th". It explains a lot about the world in which I was raised, and the world we live in today.
One chilling fact: this book was written in 1997, and the authors predicts a calamatous and unimaginable event in the early part of the 2000s that would signify the start of the Fourth Turning. Who can read this book and not think of September 11th?
Don't delay. Read this book. We are entering a winter in our times, and those people prepared with that knowledge certainly will have a more steady base in the fourth turning to come.

Colossians and Philemon (Zondervan Exegetical Commentary on the New Testament), by David W. Pao

This series is designed for those who know biblical languages. It is written primarily for the pastor and Bible teacher, not for the scholar. That is, the aim is not to review and offer a critique of every possible interpretation that has ever been given to a passage, but to exegete each passage of Scripture succinctly in its grammatical and historical context. Each passage is interpreted in the light of its biblical setting, with a view to grammatical detail, literary context, flow of biblical argument, and historical setting. While the focus will not be on application, it is expected that the authors will offer suggestions as to the direction in which application can flow.

Christocentric Commentary
By Philip Thompson
This formidable commentary is a welcome addition to the arsenal of the student of the Book of Colossians. The greatest strengths of this particular commentary are as follows: (1) the layout of the work which is due to the commentary series, (2) the writer's handling of interpretational difficulties, (3) the writer's excellent writing style and unique approaches to the text.

A word about the layout is worthy of note. Although the series has been out for some time now, this has been my first chance to read a Zondervan Exegetical Commentary on the New Testament. So, for those who may find themselves in my shoes, I'll offer a few thoughts. First, I believe that the editors have finally struck the perfect balance on the commentary layout. For those of you who found the approaches of the WBC and NIVAC far too segmented, and the Pillar and NICNT too linear, this commentary rests as close to the fulcrum as I've seen. The text is handled in the text section. Matters of structure and epistle context are dealt with in the prelude to the text. Matters of application and theology are summarized following the text. The progression is logical and you won't find yourself missing important matters regarding the text by only reading the text section (like WBC) or stopping, starting, rewinding, fast forwarding, and repeating (like the NIVAC), but you'll get the broader implications of the text (unlike the more linear formats). A second point regarding the layout is important. The editors have selected sections that are of the utmost help for interpreters. The books are approached beginning with an introduction and bibliography prior to diving into a commentary on the text. Following an examination of the text, the theology of the book is examined. Within the commentary section, the text is divided by paragraph. Each paragraph includes (1) several paragraphs on the literary context of the paragraph, (2) a snapshot of where it falls within the book's overall outline, (3) a helpful one or two sentence summary of the paragraph, (4) my favorite section, the author's translation with a glorious graphical diagram of the phrases of the paragraph, (5) a couple paragraphs on the internal structure of the paragraph (this is one of the few places where the introduction to the text sometimes overlaps with the explanation of the text itself), and (6) the explanation of the text. The text sometimes includes excurses on genre within separate panels (Hymns, 89-93; Vice and Virtue Lists, 216-218; Household Codes, 263-266). Following the analysis of the text a section of application and theology summarizes the overall messages of the paragraph. This is another of my favorite portions of this series. I would also note that the book itself includes wide margins on the introductory sections which is great for note-taking, but the margins slim down in the commentary on the text. The binding is incredibly durable and is able to withstand a great amount of abuse.

Now that we've examined the notable qualities of the series, let's examine Pao's work on Colossians (I have confined my comments to this book for brevity, as usual) more closely. I liked Pao's handling of the interpretational difficulties within the book. He presents cogent responses to those who would argue against Pauline authorship (20-23), but sees some role for Timothy in the actual composition of the book (48, 50). He cautiously holds to a Roman provenance (23-24), and to the Colossian error as syncretistic (25-31). He differs from Moo by seeing "apostle of Christ" (1:1) as a genitive of relationship rather than a subjective use. Pao argues for dividing up 1:3-8 and 1:9-14 (44), sees "hope" as the source of "faith" and "love" in 1:4-5 (46, 52), and interprets "gospel" in 1:5 as epexegetical to "truth" (53). He argues against seeing the reference to the "whole world" in 1:6 as metaphorical or simply a reference to the Roman Empire, but argues for a theological perspective (53). The writer holds that the reference to "spirit" in 1:8 is indeed a reference to the Holy Spirit (58), the reference to "the glory of his might" in 1:10 is not a possessive genitive as held by Moo, but a qualitative genitive (72), and that "joy" in 1:11-12 is connected with "giving thanks" (66, 73). He offers one of the more extensive treatments on the reference to "saints" in 1:12 (74-75). Pao cautiously holds that the Christological hymn is original with Paul (90-91) and offers a brilliant explanation of the "firstborn" reference (95). He sees the reference to "before all things" in 1:17 as both referring to time and rank, as with the reference to "beginning" in the following verse (100). He deals adequately with the challenges of the "reconciliation" references in 1:20-22 by connecting this thought with that of `pacification' (103). He has something of a unique take on the presentation of believers in 1:22 that is worth examining (108) both in regard to the method of presentation and the person to whom believers are presented to. Pao cautiously invokes arguments regarding the types of conditional clauses such as that of 1:23 (109), and holds to a subjective reference to individual belief at the heart of "faith" in the same verse (109). As opposed to Wright who sees the device as logical, and Moo who sees the word as transitional, Pao sees "now" in 1:24 as temporal (123). He defends a quota view of the sufferings in 1:24 (124-126). In 2:4, he sees "this" as referring to that which precedes the word (139-140). He views "firmness" in 2:5 as a more generic reference, rather than the military connotations assumed by others (141). He counters Wright's suggestion that "take you captive" is a slam on the Jewish unbelief (158), and views "bodily" in 2:9 as a reference to the incarnation (161-162). Pao interestingly sides with Moo's rather unique views regarding "the body of the sins of the flesh," but then differs by seeing the reference to "circumcision" in 2:11 as a metaphor for the death of Christ (165-166). Unlike many commentators, Pao argues that the baptism of 2:12 aligns with the believers' circumcision which comes before in that it is also spiritual (167). He holds that the relative pronoun in 2:12 should be "in whom" not "in which" (167), and that "dead in your sins" in the following verse is causal (169). He holds that the "handwriting" is a reference to the Mosaic Law (171) and argues that Paul is not condemning the observance of the Sabbath (185). He argues that "worship of angels" should be seen in the objective sense as worship given to angels (189). He counters Moo by seeing "is seated/sitting" as an independent verb rather than periphrastic, and by holding that the reference to the "right hand" also in 3:1 is an OT allusion (211). In an interesting approach, Pao demonstrates how the underlying word in 3:8 could imply both "blasphemy" or "slander" (224). He sees "have put off...have put on" as causal rather than imperatival in 3:9-10 (225), and presents a fascinating analysis of the groups in 3:11 (228-229). Against Moo, Pao sees the "bond" of 3:14 as a bond between believers rather than between the virtues, and the genitival structure ("of perfection") as attributive not objective (245). With Moo, he sees the "word of Christ" as objective (247). His handling of the ethical objections to the haustafeln is superb (262-267, 283-285, 348-351). He sees the code as integral to the message of the book (257), and does not try to force the commands culturally relative (262-263). He views the reference to "children" in 3:20 as to young children (268-269) and has an extensive treatment of the handling of "serve" in 3:24 as an imperative (275-276). Pao applies 3:25 to slaves and masters (277). He presents "grace" in 4:6 as divine grace rather than human gracefulness (297). He overviews the positions of "fellow prisoner" in 4:10, but does not commit to either view (312). Similarly, in regard to the previous instructions about Mark in 4:10 (313), in regard to the Laodicean epistle (320-321), and regarding the command to Archippus (321-322) Pao remains noncommittal on the best interpretation of these statements. Overall Pao's positions do not reflect a fiat regurgitation of other commentators' views, but also does not go totally rogue as other commentators on the book have done (see my review of Wright Colossians and Philemon (Tyndale New Testament Commentaries (IVP Numbered))).

Pao's writing style is perhaps second only to Moo's on Colossians (see my review of Moo The Letters to the Colossians and to Philemon (Pillar New Testament Commentary)). But he leaves little lacking unlike other writers like Bruce (see my review of Bruce The Epistles to the Colossians, to Philemon, and to the Ephesians (New International Commentary on the New Testament)). His Christological focus flows throughout the book. He does not just attempt to explain the text. He flavors the text with the book's distinctive emphasis on every turn. Probably one of the most notable aspects of his writing is that he constantly is pointing how the term or topic at hand will resurface later in the book or how the term or topic has already been treated. In so doing, Pao offers more than just a commentary on the book, but an actual theology of the epistle. Hardly an application is made without a heavy emphasis on the gospel (e.g., 62-63). He draws on Old Testament parallels (e.g., 69) without getting too overdrawn. In a book where eschatology is a major bone of contention, the writer is careful to point out every passage with eschatological overtones and comment on how the passage fits with or moves away from a `realized eschatology.' Time and again, the work rises to literary and practical heights (see especially some of the practice and theology sections) where the reader can easily be caught up from a merely mundane approach to the text. All said, the writing is brilliant and enjoyable.

If I were to target one area where the commentary is a little weak would be in the thoroughness department. The introduction to Colossians is one of the shortest (16 pages) in comparable works (Garland 19, Dunn 24, Melick 26, Wright 27, O'Brien 29, Bruce 34, and Moo 47). Perhaps I should not be quite as harsh given that there is a 13 page theological summary at the end of the book. This could put the work closer to the middle of the pack; however, I had hoped that the Colossian error would have received a deeper treatment. At times the comments on the text suffer from too much brevity, but this could perhaps be better in the mind of some readers. Still, the text is robust enough (285 pages on Colossians). So overall, these critiques are not significant, but more preferential.

In conclusion, Pao offers a brilliant addition to Colossian studies. I highly recommend this work due to the unique layout, the writer's excellent handling of interpretational challenges, and the delightful writing style and approach of the commentator. You will not be disappointed with this work. My thought is that it would best be paired with Moo when there is a need for greater depth or detail on the text or in the introduction, but it will do just fine on its own as a definitive and unique guide to the text.

Great Commentary on a Christological Book of the Bible
By Tom Farr
I've really enjoyed the Zondervan Exegetical Commentary on the New Testament series, and David W. Pao's contribution on Colossians and Philemon is another great edition to the series. Colossians is an interesting letter that deals with a major error cropping up in the Colossian church and focuses a great deal on Christology. Pao looks at Paul's authorship and handles the text in a way that draws out Paul's Christological focus throughout the letter.

Colossians is one of my favorite books of the Bible to go to over and over again, and the part about faith, hope, and love near the beginning of the letter is one that I especially love. Pao shows how foundation hope is to love and faith. The commentary also handles Paul's famous Christological hymn, describing what Christ as firstborn means. Pao's handling of Philemon presents Paul's letter as a lesson on how relationships change in light of the Gospel.

The layout of the series is helpful to each commentary, especially the theological applications after each section. If you're working through either of these books, this commentary is a great place to get your questions answered.

Best exegetical commentary for your money
By S. Thompson
I really appreciated this commentary as I was preaching through Colossians. The layout is excellent - probably the best of any of the Colossians commentaries I used. Pao's writing is excellent, and I thought he struck a good balance between getting lost in the minutia of exploring every word versus being overly simplistic The format and typesetting of the pages is very pleasant to read - a sharp contrast with WBC, for example.

The commentary does a lot of things which are very helpful for a pastor. It presents the main idea of each section -- not something you would use as a proposition for a sermon, but a concise statement of what Paul is getting at. Instead of a simple translation of the text, Pao (like the rest of this series) provides his as mechanical layout ... you remember the indented charts you had to do back in seminary, where you showed which clauses related to which, indenting as appropriate? ... complete with the relationships and functions of each clause. There is an explanation of how the text fits in the context of the letter, and a discussion of how the thought develops within the text.

The explanation of the text is nice, including the English text (Pao's own translation) in bold, along with the Greek text from which it derives. The commentary is not afraid of using technical terms from Greek, like subjective genitive. But overall, when he is dealing at that level with the Greek, he clearly lays out what those things mean. For example, when looking at Col 1:24, "I am filling up in my flesh that which is lacking of the afflictions of Christ," he spends two pages working through the implications of how you take "of Christ." This is a contentious phrase in the commentaries, and he does a good job of showing what is at stake in the discussion.

On thing I appreciated was the application section. He always includes a number of ways that the text should be applied to our lives. The application section made good points, but could have used a little more. Honestly, this is probably the weakest part of the commentary.

As I was preaching through Colossians, I would usually start my study with Moo and then go to Pao. In the early going, I found this pretty tedious because Moo and Pao's exegesis is nearly identical. You really only need one or the other. By the end of the series, I was appreciating the other aspects of this commentary which I believe make it superior to Moo. I would recommend also having O'Brien, since he gives a different exegetical take on a number of key points, and Garland who provides a very strong application. I think with those three commentaries you could do quite well.

Elementary not masterful instructions
By Jerome D. Dolenz
I purchased this book in order to teach my mother. In 1997 during middle school years I took keyboarding class, which I excelled in. In that class we worked out of a hard cover blue spiral book. In that book there were pages of pages of drills that we had to work through in order to progress toward more keys. That is where this book was a disappointment to me.
One half of this book is dedicated to typing information and the back side discusses secondary topics, such as: LAN, landscape, leading, lowercase, pixel, semicolon use, and other grammar or computer terminology. The book even goes into DOS, how to format a floppy disk, copy a file using DOS copy command and even computer programming for example half of this book has code, such as:
if ( shift == 16) {
shift=1;
buffer1 = buffer (15-shift);
++shift;
This is unacceptable. I am considering returning this book now having worked on this review and seen how off track this book really gets. This book is suppose to be purely to master computer typing, and I would have use for more drills less how to write a letter or learn of programming languages. An important topic on finger position is fully detailed in four sentences. This is dismal. The book doesn't even include the basic tip of keeping your index finger planted to the when reaching for a distant key, for instance, the return key. How is this possible?
The last thing I'll decide to spend time to say that the overall physical quality reminds me of a homemade recipe book, being small in width and length. For example, the pages are uneven where they meet the spiral top; essentially some pages are physically longer than others. There are probably more things I could write, but I think you get the point. For the record, if the book made me in any way aware of the other material covered in it than it'd be no harm no foul, but just look at the title. Hopefully, I can get this thing returned.
