Love the unique and captivating voice of Charlotte Stein!
By Maria Rose
This strange, alluring romance is the story of Molly and Cyrian. When Molly takes the job of live-in housekeeper to an eccentric aloof man, she finds herself exposed to him in more ways than one. Cyrian is by all rights someone whom she should stay far away from, a man who makes no effort to reveal any more of himself to her than at all necessary. But as she uncovers him layer by layer, she finds herself more and more attracted to the enigma that he is. And when Cryrian starts to return her feelings, things between them heat up considerably. But is an affair all this is, or is it leading to something deeper?

Though I know it's not to everyone's taste, Charlotte's introspective first person point of view found in many of her stories, including this one, really works for me. You know everything that the character of Molly feels, sees, imagines, frets over, lusts for, and despairs about. The romance between her and Cyrian unfolds like the petals of a rose, stripping away Cyrian's standoffish veneer until the heart of him is exposed. I loved how the romance contains elements of suspense to keep you on edge, wondering if they will ever get to be truly together or if that will just be too much for Cyrian. The sex is raw and blunt, sometimes even shocking and yet the romance is sweet, creating a contrast that works well and makes the story unique. For me, it was thoroughly entertaining and I bought into this unlikely couple finding their way to a happy ending. 5 stars.

Gothic in setting & naughty in tone.
By Ana F.
Gothic in setting and naughty in tone, Sweet Agony was a delight. While Sweet Agony was clearly inspired by Benedict Cumberbatch's portrayal of Sherlock, Sweet Agony is much more.

Molly Parker is a young but very determined woman. She bluffs and retorts her way in to Cyrian Hanford's house to become his housekeeper, despite the many physical and emotional obstacles he puts in her way. The Gothic dark house, with it dark paneled rooms and odd corners is a refuge, its library a wonderland.

Cyrian Hanford is a reclusive repressed eccentric who is both awkwardly handsome and possessing of a cutting wit. He is secretive, deceptive but also generous and perceptive. Mr. Hanford at turns avoids Molly or baits her, seeking a way to push her out his life. Molly persists however not only to see through his bluster but to recognize his goodness, kindness and his desire.

Sweet Agony was incredibly funny and sexy. I found myself startling my family with my laughter and struggling to find a polite/family friendly way to explain it (there is really no good way to explain why a read-out-loud of pornographic Victorian text is hilarious, without mentioning that it was a pornographic Victorian text). Stein's trademark first person magic is used to great effect in this novel. Limited as we are by Molly's knowledge we are held in supsense and discover along with her Cyrian's secrets.

While Cyrian and Molly are both sexually inexperienced they make up for it through curiosity and hunger. Their halting but scorching sexual encounters were great. Molly and Cyrian might be mismatched in many ways with the vast gaps in their social class, education and personal wealth, but they value and treasure each other like no else would. They have both been horrifically hurt through neglect and abuse by their families of origin but in each other find kindred spirits, play and love.

As with almost all my previous Stein books, I'm left wanting more, but I trust Cyrian and Molly to have a HEA that pleases them even if it confounds others.

Disclosure: I am friendly with Charlotte Stein on twitter/FB, and just love her distinctive voice. I received a review copy of Sweet Agony from Ms. Stein.

Read if you like BDSM sex books
By ShanCol19
I didn't know what to expect with this book, but when I read the synopsis, my first thought was Jane Eyre, and then when the author started making references to Eyre, I see that was intentional. Then as I was reading, I thought it was like the movie the Secretary, this was very close to the beginning of the book, and as I read further it really began to resemble the movie. There was promise in the beginning of the book, but as the book went on it just became about sex, and nothing else happened, just a whole lot of sex exploration, and the sex is of the BDSM nature. The descriptions were very graphic, and the word choice was over the top. They talk dirty to each other all the time, and try to use the most vulgar words. It wasn't really to my liking. I gave this a 3 star, rather than less because I like the whole premise of the story. The book was fine, but it definitely needed more story to it, and the ending was pretty blah. All in all, you have Beauty and the Beast/Jane Eyre in the BDSM world, so if you like all sex books then this will be good for you!

Crowdsourcing: Why the Power of the Crowd Is Driving the Future of Business, by Jeff Howe

“The amount of knowledge and talent dispersed among the human race has always outstripped our capacity to harness it. Crowdsourcing corrects that—but in doing so, it also unleashes the forces of creative destruction.”
—From Crowdsourcing

First identified by journalist Jeff Howe in a June 2006 Wired article, “crowdsourcing” describes the process by which the power of the many can be leveraged to accomplish feats that were once the province of the specialized few. Howe reveals that the crowd is more than wise—it’s talented, creative, and stunningly productive. Crowdsourcing activates the transformative power of today’s technology, liberating the latent potential within us all. It’s a perfect meritocracy, where age, gender, race, education, and job history no longer matter; the quality of work is all that counts; and every field is open to people of every imaginable background. If you can perform the service, design the product, or solve the problem, you’ve got the job.

But crowdsourcing has also triggered a dramatic shift in the way work is organized, talent is employed, research is conducted, and products are made and marketed. As the crowd comes to supplant traditional forms of labor, pain and disruption are inevitable.

Jeff Howe delves into both the positive and negative consequences of this intriguing phenomenon. Through extensive reporting from the front lines of this revolution, he employs a brilliant array of stories to look at the economic, cultural, business, and political implications of crowdsourcing. How were a bunch of part-time dabblers in finance able to help an investment company consistently beat the market? Why does Procter & Gamble repeatedly call on enthusiastic amateurs to solve scientific and technical challenges? How can companies as diverse as iStockphoto and Threadless employ just a handful of people, yet generate millions of dollars in revenue every year? The answers lie within these pages.

The blueprint for crowdsourcing originated from a handful of computer programmers who showed that a community of like-minded peers could create better products than a corporate behemoth like Microsoft. Jeff Howe tracks the amazing migration of this new model of production, showing the potential of the Internet to create human networks that can divvy up and make quick work of otherwise overwhelming tasks. One of the most intriguing ideas of Crowdsourcing is that the knowledge to solve intractable problems—a cure for cancer, for instance—may already exist within the warp and weave of this infinite and, as yet, largely untapped resource. But first, Howe proposes, we need to banish preconceived notions of how such problems are solved.

The very concept of crowdsourcing stands at odds with centuries of practice. Yet, for the digital natives soon to enter the workforce, the technologies and principles behind crowdsourcing are perfectly intuitive. This generation collaborates, shares, remixes, and creates with a fluency and ease the rest of us can hardly understand. Crowdsourcing, just now starting to emerge, will in a short time simply be the way things are done.

"An informed and enthusiastic guide to the new collaborative creativity."
—Times (London)

"A welcome and well-written corporate playbook for confusing times."
—BusinessWeek

"An engaging mix of business, sociology, organizational theory, and technology writing and fits the mold of Malcolm Gladwell’s perennial bestseller, The Tipping Point."
—Newsweek

“While small groups have often been the foundation of great performance—think SWAT teams and Skunk Works—Jeff Howe has made the compelling case for the power of far larger communities of interest. He shows in Crowdsourcing—with rich illustrations from Google and InnoCentive to Threadless and Wikipedia—that the right community with the right incentives can often invent, write, and run research and business initiatives more effectively and less expensively than traditional enterprise.”
—Michael Useem, professor of management and director of the Leadership Center at the Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania, and author of The Go Point: When It’s Time to Decide and The Leadership Moment

“Beyond the wisdom of crowds is the work of crowds, a powerful and transformative source of creativity and an economic engine that defies traditional rules. Jeff Howe’s guide to crowdsourcing—to use his perfect coinage—is insightful, fun, and indispensable to those who want to understand, or participate in, this amazing phenomenon.”
—Steven Levy, author of Hackers and The Perfect Thing

“Jeff Howe has captured a complex and vital change in the business landscape: in the next few years, your customers could become your collaborators, or your competitors. His ability to weave story and strategy together makes Crowdsourcing a readable and indispensable guide to this new world.”
—Clay Shirky, author of Here Comes Everybody

From AudioFile
The challenge with an audiobook based on a newly coined word is that after about five hours the reader gets the point--and there's still another five hours to go. In this case, WIRED reporter Jeff Howe has coined the term "crowdsourcing"--when a company takes a task previously done by employees and outsources it in the form of an open call to a large, undefined group of people. (Think Wikipedia and iStockphoto.) Explaining the concept works fine in print as the reader can skip about, and it works even better in Howe's crowdsourcing blog, but it doesn't seem to gel in audio. Considering that Howe speaks publicly--frequently and quite convincingly--on the subject, the audiobook might have been better served by his narration rather than Kirby Heyborne's meticulous and careful delivery. Howe's exuberance has some merit but is ultimately a little misguided
By Jay P
"No matter who you are, most of the smartest people work for someone else," quips Bill Joy, a Sun Microsystems co-founder. This declaration was articulated as a paean to the wisdom of crowds, the subject of Jeff Howe's 2008 book, Crowdsourcing: Why the Power of the Crowd is Driving the Future of Business. Why limit yourself to a small, expensive subset of the available talent, the argument goes, when a global network of freelancers will gladly do the job better for little or free?

Howe's enthusiasm is very nearly unequivocal. He predicts that today's tech-savvy youth will "help accelerate the obsolescence of such standard corporate fixtures as the management hierarchy and nine-to-five workday," concepts he deems to be "artifacts of an earlier age when information was scarce and all decisions...trickled down from on high." And Howe's praise of the community as exemplified in crowdsourcing is so complete that it borders on subservience: "Yes, communities need a decider," he concedes in his concluding chapter, but while "...you can try to guide the community...ultimately you'll wind up following them."

The author's unabashedly optimistic chronicle of the ascendancy of crowdsourcing (a label he created) brings to mind a phrase once made famous by former Federal Reserve chairman Alan Greenspan: "irrational exuberance." Jeff Howe's full-fledged advocacy for the crowd's potential is equally as overreaching as Jaron Lanier's dire warnings on the same topic. In You Are Not a Gadget, Lanier writes ominously, "We [have]...entered a persistent somnolence, and I have come to believe that we will only escape it when we kill the hive."

Both authors fail to account for some basic rules of human nature. Lanier laments that "when [digital developers] design an internet service that is edited by a vast anonymous crowd, they are suggesting that a random crowd of humans is an organism with a legitimate point of view." To which Howe would undoubtedly respond, Damn right. In fact, he explicitly states that "a central principle animating crowdsourcing is that the groups contain more knowledge than individuals."

Howe and Lanier are each right in their own ways. Crowdsourcing does indeed represent an entirely new model of work, one that transcends business and could upend a sizable chunk of existing corporate practices. Many of Lanier's fears, while understandable, are not feasible now or in virtually any other conceivable time horizon. And yet he is right that crowdsourcing will never replace the value of specialization. While Howe correctly lauds the democratization of decision-making -- for example, aspiring filmmakers are no longer beholden to studio executives' every whim -- his populist celebration of online egalitarianism is not bounded by realistically described limitations. "The crowd possesses a wide array of talents," Howe writes, "and some have the kind of scientific talent and expertise that used to exist only in rarefied academic environments."

The key word here is "some." Howe notes Sturgeon's Law ("90 percent of everything is crap") and briefly admits that this may present an inaccurate portrayal of reality: "a number of the people I talked to for this book thought that was a lowball estimate." Even for the ten or fewer percent that actually do provide reasonably intelligent contributions to the marketplace of ideas, much will be repetitive or non-cumulative. A thousand people with a hobbyist's interest in chemistry may all eagerly contribute to a forum on noble gases, but it hardly follows that they will achieve any real breakthrough that eludes far more studied experts in the field.

Ultimately, it is not so much the anecdotes that undercut Howe's thesis, nor is it his own repetition (which, in one particularly egregious case, consisted of several sentences copied wholesale from an earlier section of the book). Instead, it is his idealism that brings to mind countless earlier predictions of technology's ability to transform human nature, prophesies that have more often than not been proved demonstrably untrue. It remains to be seen what will become of crowdsourcing; will it go the way of the flying cars that American prognosticators naively envisioned over half a century ago? This seems unlikely, and yet so does the author's vision of a crowdsourcing revolution in business. The truth will likely lie somewhere in the middle, lodged comfortably between Jeff Howe's crowd-fueled utopia and Jaron Lanier's "hive mind" hell.

Excellent Overall Treatise on the Influence and Power of Crowdsourcing
By John Possumato
From the positives of crowdsourcing and in its influence on business (the creation of Google with citation information being a key example) to its "dark side" of mob rule and mass mediocrity (the creation of Google can be used as the same key example), Howe very effectively explores by analysis and representation the phenomena of crowdsourcing as its "hyper fueled" by the World Wide Web. Howe effectively outlines the transformation that crowdsourcing on the Web has created, from business and the means of production, to information distribution, to finance, what factors caused this transformation and where this may lead in the future. Finally, Howe projects the future, when the "digital natives" (those children now coming of age in the Internet era), supplant the "digital immigrants" (the rest of us), and, reminds us of the Pew Internet & American Life Project study that determined that, as of 2007, 93% of all American 12 to 17 year olds are regular Internet users, and, of those, 64% are creating content among themselves on the Web, and finally, the majority of those content creators are creating content in crowdsourcing, social network type environments. All and all, this is one of the most worthwhile books on the every expanding, and talked about, topic, and is a "must read" for anyone interested in the emerging crowdsourcing evolution.

Great book, although slightly outdated.
By My wife won't let me pick a name.
This book, authored by the man who coined the term "crowdsourcing," was written at a time when online crowdsourcing was still in its infancy. Due to that, he tends to rely heavily on a few stories to make his points. However, despite that, the book is a fascinating read that will contribute enormously to my thesis studies on how businesses should utilize crowdsourcing.

“Bribery Case Hits UN”

“VC Arrested for Insider Trading Now Accused of Defrauding His Firm”

These recent headlines in the Wall Street Journal highlight the on-going problem of leaders who have “gone south” and have taken their organizations with them. Stanford business school professor Jeffrey Pfeffer would use these as examples of how “the leadership industry has failed.” Prescriptions for leaders to be more truthful are at odds with what goes on in the real world. “The ability to lie can be very useful for getting ahead,” says Pfeffer. “Manipulation is a foundation for social power…in fact; there is a reciprocal relationship between power and lying.”

That brings us to Bill George’s latest book, “Discover Your True North: Expanded and Updated.” In it, George brings his wisdom, observations, examples, and practices to bear on helping leaders be something more than what Pfeffer proposes. He encourages us to build on our natural leadership gifts and to stay on our “True North” track to inspire and empower others to excellence. According to George, our “True North” is the internal compass which, based on deeply held beliefs, values, and principles, “represents who we are at our deepest level.” Knowing our internal compass helps when pressures and seductions detour us from achieving our purpose in life. It is our lifesaver… alerting us to get back on track when the life being lived is not aligned with who we are at the deepest level.

George’s “True North” needs some reconciling to Pfeffer’s belief about the reality of leadership. Pfeffer talks about power for the sake of power while George talks about power that flows from character. This disconnect may be attributed to the lack of good role models for those seeking to be leaders. I have observed over the years that leadership training if not reinforced by good role models does not lead to “True North” leadership. It is hard work to develop the type of leader George talks about. It is “The Road Less Traveled” due to the required investment of time by both the student and the role model.

For this reason, I recommend “Discovering Your True North” but with the caveat that it is reinforced by a role model. This may be satisfied with George’s concept of a “support team” that he details in the book. I have worked with Bill George and can vouch that he is the real thing. I am sure that he provides the modeling needed to those he touches in the class room and for those he works with in his consultancy.

In brief about this updated edition - George revisits his NYC Times best-seller and now business classic that was released in 2007. He integrates his personal insights gained as CEO of Medtronic and as a professor and Senior Fellow at Harvard Business School with new first-person interviews of 48 “authentic global leaders.” These leaders include many who have garnered the positive attention of the press and have inspired and empowered millions to excellence –Indra Nooyi, Jack Ma, Alan Mulally, John Mackey, Sheryl Sandberg, Michael Bloomberg, and many others. He also includes updates on the original 125 participants featured in his first book and includes a chapter on finding your “GQ,” your global quotient.

George also includes case studies of those who were seduced and made bad choices which led to painful detours in their lives – Rajat Gupta (insider trading), Lance Armstrong (fraud and demonization of those who tried to get the truth known), and Michael Baker (fraud). It is early but we all may have something to learn from what appears to be a scandal of major proportions at Theranos. Did Elizabeth Holmes take time to find her “True North”? Did she take a detour? Will Theranos survive? For her, this book may be too late.

Those who read the first book will find this to be just as inspiring. For those who missed the first book, they will find this to be a treasure and regret they missed the 2007 edition.

By Khwaja Shaik
This is the most robust and practical leadership book everyone should read. A must read for all leaders. Corporate CEOs and leaders at all levels - myself included- have been inspired by the works of Bill George. Get ready for a life- changing experience.

In "Discover your true north", Bill shares his remarkable insights and wisdom that can be applied to reach our full potential and make a positive difference in the lives of others.

This book should be a required reading for an MBA curriculum. This is is one of the few books that I would keep on my desk. This will remind me every morning to read a chapter and think about Bill's theories that can be applied to my challenges that I face at all walks of my life (work, home, social etc.).

Using this book you can discover your true north (your internal compass) that guides you successfully throughout your life as a leader and human being.

Throughout"Discover Your True North",successful individuals discuss how they became authentic leaders. For you, the reader, this book provides an opportunity to learn from authentic leaders and to create your own development plan to become an authentic leader. It includes five areas of your development as a leader:

1. Cultivating self-awareness, at the center of your compass
2. Defining your values
3. Finding the "sweet spots" of your motivated capabilities
4. Building your support team and
5. Leading an integrated life

Finally the book describes how you can makethe journey from "I" to "We" as an empowering leader and achieve mastery towardsglobal leadership.

As discussed this book is a rare find.....full of real insights harvested from revealing stories of Warren Buffet, Howard Schultz, Paul Polman, Indra Nooyi, Arianna Huffington, Jack Ma, Michael Bloomberg and Mark Zuckerberg.

So jumpstart your leadership game plan for success.

Another Winner
By Bob Vanourek
Bill George takes us even further than he has before in what it takes to be a good leader in the 21st century. Building off his previously successful books, "Authentic Leadership" and "True North," Bill goes deeper and farther leveraging insights from dozens of global leaders, each with a compelling story.
Bill redefines one's True North, showing the critical differences between leaders in the last century and now. Everyone has a life story, but successful leaders reflect on their stories and reframe them to learn and grow, especially from their crucible experiences. Bill provides a graphic compass for your True North journey composed of one's values and principles (north), sweet spot (east), support team (south), and integrated life (west) to arrive at one's center of self-awareness. It's a simple and powerful graphic.
One's self awareness derives from one's story, including sometimes losing your way and the crucibles encountered, and progressing through introspection and honest feedback to self-compassion, self-acceptance, and self-actualization. Another powerful graphic.
Healing through vulnerability is a critical concept. If one is open and vulnerable to others, then how can others do something to you that you haven't already revealed? In such vulnerability, there is power. Power, not to dominate, but power to build relationships. Beautifully described.
All this is not soft, sappy stuff because organizations led this way are mission driven and values-centered. They engage people unleashing innovation and superior service which delights customers, grows revenue and profits, and enhances the shareholder value. It's not only the right thing to do, but it pays off financially. Again beautifully described.
Another winner from a master leader and thinker.

How To Write Your Best Story - Advice for Writers on Spinning an Enchanting Tale, by Philip Martin

''I find that most people know what a story is until they sit down to write one.''-- Flannery O'Connor

Beginning writers too often believe that plot, or character development, or some structural element is what's needed to get published. This book looks at what really makes fiction work: good storytelling.

''A good writer is basically a storyteller,'' said Isaac Bashevis Singer, winner of the Nobel Prize. However, basic storytelling techniques, despite their immense value to all writers, are seldom taught in writing courses or in ''how to get published'' books of advice.

This slim book explores three key elements that fuel the magic of story - intriguing eccentricity, delightful details, and satisfying surprises. The proven storytelling techniques are time-tested and used by the best authors, including by winners of the Nobel Prize, the Pulitzer, and National Book Award, as well as by commercially successful authors whose books appear on bestseller lists and whose work is treasured by generations of fans.

Written by an accomplished editor and indie-press publisher, this guide draws on the author's decades of experience in the book trade, studying what really works for emerging writers and editing many books of advice on literary craft and career development.

It will help writers in their efforts to craft better fiction (or nonfiction) and to get their best work published.

"An inspiring, captivating gem of book on the storyteller's art. I loved it."
- Douglas Clegg, author of Neverland, Isis, Afterlife, and many other acclaimed & bestselling novels

"This is a gem of a book - a must-read for anyone who wishes to craft the 'best story' possible."
-- Raymond Bial, author of more than 80 critically-acclaimed books for children and adults, including Amish Home, The Underground Railroad, Where Lincoln Walked, and many others.

What [Martin] succeeds in doing, admirably, is not only describing some of the elements of good storytelling, but describing them in such a way as to model good storytelling. . . . In short, this book is wonderfully readable.

A Refreshing Look at Storytelling
By Moira Allen
Martin launches his book with the premise that thousands of stories are being written with "something lacking." The writer labors, but fails to grab the attention of the reader. In this book, he asks whether good storytelling can be "taught."

What he succeeds in doing, admirably, is not only describing some of the elements of good storytelling, but describing them in such a way as to model good storytelling in the very act of explaining it. In short, this book is wonderfully readable. I have stacks of books on my shelf, waiting to be read -- but when I picked up this one I wanted to keep going until I finished it.

Martin breaks down the topic of storytelling into three basic sections: Eccentricity, Details, and Surprises. Each section is satisfyingly complete, and packed with examples from favorite stories, classic novels, and some less well-known sources. Throughout the book, Martin weaves in a parable to keep the reader "hooked" on a growing story that serves as an example of the techniques being described.

The tips here aren't new or groundbreaking. We've all heard that "less is more," and that knowing what to leave out of your story is just as important as what to put in. What works here is the style in which the material is delivered. Too many books on "how to write a story" are dry, pedantic and dull -- delivered like lectures to a group of drowsy students. Others illustrate their text with examples drawn entirely from their own works -- which is great if you think their work is brilliant but not so great if you don't.

Thus, for a book on "how to write well" to work, it must itself be written well -- and in such a way as to encourage you to read it. In this, How to Write Your Best Story is a success, and an enjoyable addition to any fiction writer's bookshelf.

Great Book!
By Raymond Bial
Phillip Martin has edited several of my books, so I know that he is a great editor. Now, having read How to Write Your Best Story, I can say that he is a great writer, too.

This is a gem of a book--a must read for anyone who has written or wishes to craft the "best story" possible. Toward the end of the book, Phillip refers to a work by nature writer Barry Lopez, who define isumataq, the Inuit word for "storyteller," as follows: "the person who creates the atmosphere in which wisdom reveals itself."

This summarizes the tone and insight of this wonderful little book. It is just one of the many words of wisdom in which Phillip Martin weaves a story about how to better write and simply enjoy our own stories.

Stunning!
By Mark Green
This is Nanci Danison’s fourth book, broader in scope and more information packed than any of her books to date.

The overriding aim of this book was to directly respond to questions and issues raised by readers and YouTube viewers over the years since the publication of her first book back in 2007 (I was pleased to see a few of my own questions in there as well).

Nanci’s NDE is fundamentally different to just about any other NDE you are likely to stumble across. In fact the term NDE is slightly misleading as applied to this author, since Nanci, unlike most other NDEers, was actually meant to die, and so progressed to stages far beyond what most NDEs are even aware of from their relatively brief excursions into the afterlife.

I personally consider Nanci Danison as the most authoritative source of information on the afterlife and metaphysics. Her writings are unique in convincingly accounting for pretty much the full range of NDE accounts, together with their often diverse and apparently conflicting details and viewpoints. The bigger picture necessary to account for all these various viewpoints only emerges once one attains the higher levels of perspective associated with later stages of the afterlife transition process, as experienced by Nanci.

I was originally drawn to Nanci’s NDE account due to the metaphysics described in her account, which tallied pretty well with my understanding of physics learnt at university. I am not naturally drawn to new age or spiritual literature, and previously believed the reductive materialism description of reality. In retrospect I now know this viewpoint is squarely rooted in out-dated 17th century Newtonian physics – something which is useful for calculating such things as the trajectory of a rocket, but rubbish for describing how reality really works.

This book is brilliantly written, and really draws you in, revealing one universal truth after another and describing a metaphysics which is both fascinating and astounding. That is not to say it is always an easy read. In some respects it can be quite challenging. A number of past reviewers have stated that Nanci does not sugar-coat what she says, which I would say is quite a reasonable assessment. Indeed some aspects of Nanci’s message are particularly difficult to internalize. One chapter for instance is devoted to deconstructing the concept of evil. The conclusions drawn can be a little difficult for some people to accept. Nonetheless the subject material is covered particularly well, and neatly encapsulates the standard philosophical analysis of evil in terms that are exceptionally easy to understand (in fact her description makes the extraneous details inherent in typical philosophical writings on this subject appear a bit like pretentious pontification). In this chapter Nanci effectively exposes the human concept of evil for the artificial (and often arbitrary and inconsistent) social construct it actually is, providing ample examples which clearly demonstrate how fluid the notion of evil is, continuously varying over time and geographical regions. Despite its counter-intuitive and slightly unappealing conclusion, it is nonetheless quite hard to argue with the brute force of the logic

Arguably one of the most contentious chapters of the book deals with the thorny issue of suicide. The upshot of this chapter is that suicide is perfectly acceptable from the spiritual level of perspective. This will no doubt greatly perturb a number of her readers, and I suspect Nanci will get quite a spanking for having the nerve to put this in her book. Personally I emphatically agree with every word she writes in this chapter, but I know many won’t. I know all too well how judgemental many people are on this issue, and after reading this chapter I have a better idea of the reason why this is the case as well.

Another chapter deals with sexuality, and explains that homosexuality is fine with God; again potentially putting the author in the firing line of hard-line conservatives and bigots. Interestingly she explains that our polar view of gender is a gross simplification, and in fact many biological factors conspire to create a gender normally falling on some part of a spectrum. Personally speaking it just so happens that my chromosomes have all conspired to align in such a way so as to create the purest possible form of heterosexuality possible. Nonetheless I do accept that in reality there probably is a spectrum, with many individuals falling somewhere between the two extremes we identify as pure male and female gender. (This is quite relevant to the recent controversies surrounding the Indian sprinter Dutee Chand and South African middle distance runner Caster Semenya. Both have a condition known as hyperandrogenism, characterized by high levels of male hormones. Since a spectrum exists, the vast majority of female athletes lean towards the excessive male hormone end anyway, directly contributing to their superior athletic performance compared to their peer group (basically female athletes require a bit of the male stuff coursing through their veins to be much cop at their sport). This fact seriously undermines the argument supporting the IAAF claim that these women should be banned from competing. One would have to be very arbitrary in deciding the threshold that determines which athletes have too much male hormone present in their bodies to compete at athletics).

Nanci successfully clears up a few points of confusion in this fourth book of hers. For instance, she has consistently claimed in the past that ‘learning how to love’ has no real role to play in our human incarnations. What is far more important allegedly is how to cope with the physical challenges inherent in living in a violent and primitive culture. She is fond of referring to the violent video game ‘Call of Duty: Black Ops’ as a means to illustrate this point, drawing a parallel between human players who want to face challenges in a game like environment and spiritual beings who likewise like to face challenges in a simulated (from their point of view) environment. At first glance there may seem to be something not quite right about this, but Nanci offers a plausible explanation; spiritual beings are unconditionally loving by nature anyway in their natural spiritual state, so therefore have no need to experience unconditional love in a human life. I have always found the logic of this argument doesn’t quite work however. Spiritual beings might find it easy to express unconditional love in the bliss of the afterlife, but surely it is not so easy to express unconditional love in an often stressful and hostile Earth environment. Would this not also be a worthy challenge for a spiritual being? This point is cleared up in this book however. It turns out that we do in a sense come here to ‘learn how to love’ after all, as Nanci states: “It [human life] is like a virtual reality game in which the only thing that matter is whether we are able to allow our true nature, and unconditional love, to show through the Avatar we select.” So in a weaker sense we do in fact ‘learn how to love’, just not in the strictest literal sense, which of course would not make sense.

There are a couple of innocuous looking little statements in this book which are in fact quite loaded, and have far reaching implications. Nanci states in response to a readers question that she can’t tell anyone how to feel about ‘stepping on ant’ but suggests our attitude towards doing such a thing might reasonably be influenced by the knowledge that the soul inside of the ant probably factored in the possibility of being stamped on prior to incarnation. What immediately follows from this is a series of closely related questions: Should our attitude towards eating meat be influenced by the possibility that the soul inside a cow and pig might have anticipated being eaten at some stage? If so should we similarly be influenced when it comes to animal testing for such things as cosmetic products? What about fur coats? Also does this same principle apply to human animals? Should our acceptance of homelessness and poverty be influenced by the possibility of having been pre-empted by the incarnated souls concerned? (Indeed it might have even been their life plan!) Should we even be trying to remedy social injustices in general? Might we be messing with the very reason some souls chose to incarnate into human life to begin with? Like I said, quite a loaded statement.

Another loaded statement found in the book is the suggestion that our inclination to “rubberneck road accidents” is due to our spiritually based inquisitive nature. If this is the case what about people who enjoy watch snuff movies? Is this too coming from our spiritual nature? If so what about people who enjoy the spectacle of sadistic blood sports, involving killing or maiming animals (or watching humans hurt each other for that matter?) Is this also coming from our spiritual nature?

These possibilities immediately follow from Nanci’s original statements. Deliberately or not, Nanci has in effect implied these things (or at the very least the possibility of these things). The big question is – do we have a bit of a voyeuristic bent in the afterlife? We seem to in this one.

Finally I would like to discuss something that has been a real sticking point for me ever since I started reading Nanci’s books. To fully explain the issue I am about to, a bit of background is needed. The basic metaphysics described in Nanci’s Backwards books is as follows: There is only one entity in existence – Source (basically what we refer to as God). In the beginning God/Source knew everything there was to know in a purely intellectual fashion, but craved the experiential knowledge of what it knew intellectually (a bit like the difference between reading a book on flying an airplane and actually flying one). To cut a long story short Source/God somehow carved up part of its energy or consciousness into ‘characters’, referred to as Light Beings in the Backwards books. These are not really ‘Beings’ at all but literally individuated points of self-awareness within the vast consciousness of Source. The separation between the core Source and the individuated bits of consciousness referred to as Light Beings is conceptual rather than literal. Source also manifested a ‘physical’ universe within its mind. The universe only appears physical from a limited perspective point, but in reality is simply made of energy (actually perfectly congruent with modern theoretical physics). The whole universe is literally a thought in the mind of God, who expended a portion of its mental energy to create the universe we currently perceive. The primary aim of creating Light Beings was to effectively create portals via which Source could experience physicality, something which is impossible for it to do in any direct literal sense.

Put slightly differently; Source conjured up the next best thing to actually being a physical creature having real physical experiences. It has in effect enabled itself to experience physicality via pure imaginings in its mind. By creating amnesia in these pseudo-beings who are projected into the universe, who as a consequence of this amnesia become temporarily unaware of what they really are, the possibility of experiencing physicality by proxy has been fully realized.

However the plot thickens. Part of this manifested universe consists of creatures (including humans) which have self-awareness of their own. This native consciousness is NOT the soul of the animal however. The soul comes into the picture when Light Beings choose to invest part of their own self-awareness into creatures such as humans. This forms some kind of composite entity consisting of a human animal/LB soul – basically two consciousnesses wrapped up into one.

The important point this is leading to is as follows: Once one is presented with this picture a pertinent question is immediately raised – what happens to the native consciousness of the human at death? Does it proceed into the afterlife like the LB soul or simply cease to exist?

Nanci has clearly stated in her previous books that humans do in fact die, but it hasn’t always been clear exactly what she means by this. For instance, could this ‘dying’ simply be referring to the fact that the physical constituents of the human animal decay and eventually decompose away? Or alternatively does ‘dying’ mean literally that: the native consciousness of the human literally ceasing to exist at bodily death?

After reading the initial chapters of Nanci’s latest book I thought I finally had the answer to this. Here she explains in very explicit terms exactly what a Light Being is, and by extension, provides an important clue to answering the above question. Specifically she does this by explaining exactly what it means for a Light Being to re-emerge from the core entity of Source after it has fully merged back into it. All it requires is for Source to gather the full set of memories associated with the LB in question, together with the full specification of personality traits associated with these memories, bundle it together with a bit of Source consciousness – and voila! – a Light Being emerges. (It follows from this that the actual definition of an Light Being is a personality specification and associated set of data representing the entirety of memories associated with that personality specification). In other words God effectively stores a massive database consisting of Light Being profiles, which can pop in and out of existence at the whim of God.

It is at this point things get interesting. If Source were to erase all its memory banks, and therefore all data associated with LBs, clearly nothing (in the relevant sense) would die. This would be nothing more than Source figuratively reformatting its internal hard drive. More importantly, it also follows from this that any other ‘being’ in existence, a ‘physical’ creature such as a human for instance, would also not die, since the native consciousness associated with these creatures is also ultimately Source consciousness.

So it seems from all this that death is strictly impossible in principle (providing Source itself does not die of course). And from this it becomes self-evident that when Nanci talks about humans dying it is not literal.

Only it is! A few chapters on from this Nanci states “Their [humans] consciousness and awareness terminate at death.” Well it doesn’t get more clearer than that. No ambiguity there I guess.

So why is this such a big deal? Well if you are like me you might feel a bit of sympathy for the poor humans. They have the double whammy of not choosing to be here (unlike Light Beings who do get to choose) and then having their consciousness terminated at the end of it all. But there is something else. Nanci provides no meaningful criteria for judging whether or not one is the human or the LB soul inhabiting the human. Which one of the entities are we? How could we possibly tell?

This is an issue that I hope Nanci will meaningfully address at some later stage, maybe in a newsletter article or a future book perhaps. In the mean time I will just keep hoping I am the incarnated soul and not the human.

Despite the vast amount of questions answered in this book there are still a few fundamental issues that remain unresolved (this is not a criticism).

i) Does God have a sense of ethics? From what I can see all the justification for Source not judging certain acts as evil revolves around the fact that Earth life is not real from its perspective. But supposing it was? Would that make a difference? Nanci states that Source has no discernment, which would suggest it would not in fact make a difference. But she also states it is impossible for Source to perform any act of evil. Surely this would entail the ability to judge right and wrong? It seems to me the jury is still out on this one.

ii) Nanci, like many spiritual authors, states that suffering is not real. It is not clear to me how this can be the case. The reasoning used to back this up is always along the lines that from a higher perspective level the human experiences, including all the suffering, are experienced vicariously. But isn’t this like saying ‘your pain isn’t real because I can’t feel it’? (In Nanci’s defence no other spiritual author as offered a meaningful explanation of this either. From my experience the claim that suffering is an illusion is always simply asserted by spiritual authors without any meaninful explanation to back it up. I continue to await such an explanation).

One last point. Nanci gives a brief discourse in response to various people who have accused her of making all this up to make a quick buck. In one of her later chapters she provides very compelling reasons why this is not the case. I happen to personally know enough about the publishing industry to recognise the truth of what she says, so don’t have to take anything she says about this matter on faith. I cannot repeat verbatim the entire discussion relating to this, but I will briefly say that typically people are inclined to attribute a rate of enumeration to average authors which more realistically correspond to New York Times best sellers. No account is made of how much money is siphoned off by publishers, editors, marketers, distributers etc, before a single penny even reaches the author. I suggest to anyone who feels Nanci is raking it in and laughing all the way to the bank they might take a few moments now and again to take a quick peek at Nanci’s Amazon sales ranking. Take it from me, there is no way on God’s green earth that this woman is in this to make money.

In summary, this is an outstanding book. Even if you find it hard to agree with everything that is written in it, it will give you plenty to think about, and will likely substantially deepen your thinking and understanding of metaphysical/spiritual issues and concepts. This in my opinion is a seminal piece of work.

An Absolute Must Read For Anyone Seeking REAL Answers
By Christa
I have every book of hers in my collection, and I absolutely believe them to be valid, and truthful. My collection of books on the afterlife, mediums, extra terrestrial subject matter, NDES, ect, is very broad and extensive. Some seem like pure fluff, others are scientifically difficult to understand, but Danison has a very straightforward, honest way of speaking. She is a breath of fresh air for someone so logical and fact based, given her previous career. And the information she imparts from the spirit world is mind boggling to put it simply.

Another of Nnanci Danison's Brilliant Books.
By Hideko Imanishi
An excellent book with every question answered so eloquently. Nanci's explanations and descriptions of the afterlife, in all her books, are the best I've come across in this subject, I thank God (source) it happened to a lawyer, she can, and does, explain the unexplainable. Another of Nanci's brilliant books, perfect for those who want answers to what happens after we die. Thanks Nanci. Les. Denniston.
