Mercy, by Deneane Clark

The youngest of six sisters, Mercy Ackerly has known since thirteen what everyone else is about to learn: She’ll marry the elusive Duke of Blackthorne.

WORTH THE WAIT

It was love at first sight for thirteen-year-old Mercy Ackerly. The second she encountered the traveling Duke of Blackthorne, she fell in love…with his horses. And since Sebastian Tremaine was also perfect, they would someday be man and wife.

From the start, Sebastian has felt oddly protective of Mercy. Delightfully straightforward, the girl is everything honest and sweet, which is why he approved when his best friend married into the family—and then so did his other friends. But now Mercy’s all grown up. Now she’s facing the ton’s matchmaking mamas and their deceitful daughters, is joining a world he despises, be it the ballrooms and routs or the opulent crush. He would shield her if he could, would do anything but entangle his heart.

Sebastian will fight the inevitable for as long as he can. And then he’ll fight for it. Some matches are schemed for, some are arranged, and some have just been coming for a long, long time.

Mercy by Deneane Clark

Before I began to read this book, I think I read somewhere that it's actually the fourth book in a series. Even so, I never felt lost, as Mercy focuses on the youngest daughter of the Ackerly family. In my mind, Mercy definitely can stand alone as a complete novel by itself. Set in Regency London and the surrounding villages and towns, I was drawn into this story from the beginning based on the strength of the characters. Not only that though, I felt like Deneane did a wonderful job of creating a sense of time and place and I could picture the settings of various scenes in my mind as I read the novel.

From the outset, I grew to love 13 year old Mercy and the fact that she was her own person and very much independent minded. Once chance encounter and she knew who she wanted to marry when she was of age to do so. Before that though, she has to find her way through the intrigues of her debut Season in high society, not to mention the rivalry with other debutantes.

As for the Duke - Sebastian Tremaine, I thought he was a great male romantic lead. It was interesting to see how his relationship with Mercy changed over the course of the book, but I wanted him and Mercy to have their HEA.

It wasn't just Mercy and Sebastian though, as I grew to like many of the secondary characters, including Mercy's sisters: Patience, Amity, Grace, Charity, and Faith along with Sebastian's friend Trevor.

I really enjoyed this historical romance set in Regency Britain, and my rating is 4/5 platypires.

Really is worth the good reviews

I have no idea why I missed this long awaited ending to the series. I haven't given 5 stars in what feels like ages but I really enjoyed this book and felt it deserved the accolades. Although it's the finale, it's also fine as a standalone like other reviewers have said, since the author gives some background to the secondary characters. I think that Ms Clark wrote a beautiful romance and although the more picky Regency readers might struggle with some of the finer details, the love story overshadows those minor issues and brought tears to my eyes on a few occasions. Both main characters are likeable and honourable and even though it took a while to get to the hea it was worth the wait. If you like stories about Dukes and especially Dukes called Sebastian, this one is definitely worth reading.

Grace - Mercy

My review is for the entire series of the Ackerly sisters books.

Though a little repetitive in that each book has each sister in some sort of perilous situation and Patience and Amity did not get their own book, I did enjoy all the books and did not hesitate to purchase the next and the next.

I liked the authors writing style and enjoyed the characters she created. She kept me engaged throughout each book and ended each book with an epilogue which I really like, to bring closure.
